El sol se eleva sereno cerca de las 07hs sobre la Chacarita, mientras la neblina se ocupa de suavizar su intensidad haciendo posible observarlo a simple vista (25-May-2009).
The sun rises near 07hs quiet on the Chacarita (the poorest neighborhood near the bay), while the mist is responsible for making it possible to soften its intensity to observe with the naked eye (May-25th-2009).

No olvidaré la madrugada del 25 de mayo de 2009 sólo porque fue cuando dejé de fumar luego de ser insoportablemente obsesivo, sino que también porque hacían varias semanas que aguardaba con paciencia los amaneceres hasta que la naturaleza me ofrezca uno de mis espectáculos favoritos: la neblina. Y fue en esa fecha en que llegó pero lastimosamente ese día apliqué a Murphy y me dije "hoy no será el día" y cuando me percaté ya fue tarde y fotografié muy poco (Sólo las primeras 2 tomas). Pero la naturaleza muy sabia me volvió a dar una segunda oportunidad en detrimento de mi descanso en las siguientes noches luego de la madrugada mencionada, porque esperé cada una hasta el 17 de Junio, cuando el espectáculo volvió. Y yo estaba más que preparado....

I will not forget the morning of May 25, 2009 only because it was when I stopped smoking after being unbearably obsessive, but also because they made several weeks waiting patiently until nature dawns offer me one of my favorite shows: the fog. It was on that date, but unfortunately that day was applied to Murphy (the one of the laws) and I said "not today be the day" and when I realized it was too late and I photographed a little (only the first two shots). But the very wise nature made to give me a second chance at the expense of my rest in the next few nights after the day mentioned, because each one waited until June 17 when the show returned. And I was more than prepared...

06:10 AM - Las luces refractadas por la neblina ofrecían este maravilloso show de colores, mientras el Panteón de los Héroes descansaba imponente.

06:13 AM - Un carretillero comenzaba sus labores sobre Palma, la calle más céntrica de Asunción.

06:24 AM - Un funcionario del Palacio de López aguarda el inicio del día laboral mientras observa la neblina minutos antes de llegar a su pico de intensidad.

06:30 AM - En el Puerto de Asunción la neblina llegaba a su punto máximo, mientras los empleados se presentaban a su lugar de trabajo.

Las enormes grúas del puerto emulan peligrosos robots gigantes aguardando en silencio, dispuestos a despertar e infundir miedo a los habitantes de la ciudad.
The huge cranes from the port emulate silent dangerous giant robots waiting, ready to awaken and instill fear into the inhabitants of the city.




Un infante de marina se sitúa en el borde del muelle del puerto, frente a la nada.

06:37 AM - Un botecito con trabajadores proveniente de Chaco'i fue sorprendido por la neblina intensa en el medio del río. Con la pericia de su capitán Carlos Aquino, pudo llegar al puerto siempre con el temor de embestirlo debido a que la visibilidad era de tan sólo unos metros.

Fiesta de San Juan en el mítico Emiliano R. Fernández

Feast of San Juan in the legendary Emiliano R. Fernández

Y con mítico también podría referirme a la palabra con que siempre la confunden: "místico". El tiempo parece no pasar año tras año en donde las familias vecinas del Club Emiliano R. Fernández (ERF) festejan una Fiesta de San Juan manteniendo ese misticismo, la magia, el misterio religioso y a la vez pagano que rodea una de las más importantes fiestas patronales a nivel nacional. Espero en 2010 poder recorrer aquellas recónditas esquinas de mi amado Paraguay y brindarles a Uds. la captura de momentos en las más conocidas fiestas patronales de cada lugar. Por ahora más parece un sueño que un proyecto, pero uno nunca debe dejar dormir las ideas. En el 2009 me dije "Este es mi año para el ERF" y esperé ansioso la fiesta de San Juan, porque es una de las únicas que mantiene esa tradición y cultura casi olvidadas o dejadas de lado (sobre todo en Asunción), en donde los juegos típicos son reemplazados por juegos de kermesse, playstation, cárcel y casa del terror. ¿Qué nos pasa? ¿Nos dejamos fascinar por las culturas de otro país y alabamos que aún la mantienen pero aquí cuando nos toca somos los primeros en hacer la vista gorda y preocuparnos de lucrar omitiendo nuestra rica cultura gastronómica y la tradición de los juegos?. ¿Acaso aquellos juegos de conocer a tu futura pareja como "el juego de la vela", "el cuchillo en el banano" y "los papelitos de san juan dice que sí o dice que no" perdieron toda su escencia ante el facebook, el orkut, los SMS y la frase del día? En el 2009 nos tocó perder tan sólo un poco de la exactitud de la Fiesta de San Juan que todos los años se hace en el día previo aguardando las 00:00, porque la naturaleza dijo "NO" aquella vez y se pasó para después. ¿Y la magia? La magia siguió intacta...

And with legendary (*mítico* in spanish) I could also refer to the word that always is confuse, "mystic". The time seems to stand every year where families neighboring the Emiliano R. Fernández Club (ERF) celebrate a Feast of San Juan maintained that mysticism, magic, while religious and bot pagan mystery surrounds one of the most important feasts nationwide. I hope in 2010 to cover those hidden corners of my beloved Paraguay and bring to you the capture of moments in the most popular festivities ef each location. It now looks more like a dream that one project, but one should never let you ideas to sleep. In 2009 I said "this is my year for the ERF and anxiously waited for the feast of San Juan, because it is one lasts of maintaining that tradition and culture almost forgotten or left out (especially in Asunción), where Typical games are replaced with carnival games, playstation, the jail and house of terror. What happens to us? Are we let ourselves be fascinated by the cultures of another country and praise that still remain there, but here when we have the opportunity we are the first to turn a blind eye and ignoring our rich culinary culture and tradition of the San Juan home-games?. Did those games to meet your future partner as "the game of the candle", "knife in a banana plant" and "the papers of San Juan says yes or no" lost all its essence to the facebook, the orkut, the SMS and the Quote of the day? In 2009 we had to lose just a little of the accuracy of the Feast of San Juan, since every year is awaiting the day before at 00:00; but not this time because the nature said "NO" (with a huge rain) and we have to saved it for later. And what about the magic? The magic kepts intact ...

El "Emiliano" se viste de fiesta cada año, esperando a la gente que gusta de compartir y entretenerse en una gran fiesta.
The "Emiliano" dresses up every year, waiting for people who likes to share and entertain themselves in a big celebration.



Diversas compañías de baile, incluso la propia del Emiliano ofrecen un hermoso espectáculo de nuestra tierra: la Danza Paraguaya.

La mujer paraguaya de antaño, la mujer que quedó en aquel tiempo olvidado y sólo evocada en guaranias y poemas de Ortíz Guerrero... esa mujer, dignamente representada por estas jóvenes.
The old Paraguayan woman, the woman that lies in that forgotten time, and only evoked in guaranias and poems of Ortiz Guerrero ... that woman worthily represented by these young girls.



El público se deleita con muestras de nuestro floklore, "London Karape", "La Palomita", "El Solito", "Galopera" son ejecutados por las distintas compañías de Danza que se presentan.
The public is delighted with samples of our folklore, "London Karape" (small London), "La Palomita" (little dove), "El solito" (the alone), "Galopera" are performed by different dance companies presented.



La Bandita interpreta las polcas de los bailes, dejando así la fiesta en un marco de tradición integral.
The little Band (Bandita) played the polka for the dances, leaving the party in a comprehensive environment of tradition.



Mientras tanto, el "Emiliano" no pierde tiempo y en otro espacio se gestan otras actividades, como en este caso: el juego del yvyra sy`i (palo engrasado).
Meanwhile, the "Emiliano" does not waste time and some activities are conceived in other places, as in this case: the game of yvyra sy`i (greasy pole). In this game, young boys trying to climb the pole (which is very very greasy) to reach the highest part for a prize (money and other stuff), only using their hands, or ropes and rags.



La cantina quizás sería el único lugar que no para en toda la fiesta. En este caso no pude contenerme ante una de mis mayores debilidades del San Juan: el chipá asador.
The bar may be the only place that does not stop throughout the party. In this case I could not resist myself to one of my biggest weaknesses of the San Juan: the chipá asador (chip grill)


Cerca de la media noche, llega uno de los juegos tradicionales más esperados, que es la quema del Juda Kái, un muñeco repleto de bombas y fuegos de artificio que detonarán una vez alcanzada las llamas. Como la fiesta es de San Juan -el que bautizó a Jesús- la quema del Juda Kái se toma como un acto de repudio a Iscariote, quien vendió a Jesús por 12 monedas de oro. Anteriormente sólo lo llamábamos Juda Kái a secas, pero con la llegada de la democracia la gente perdió el miedo a la clase política, y ahora son políticos corruptos o figuras públicas que de alguna forma entristecieron a este país o generan repudio (sumados a la libertad del pueblo de exponer lo que siente), los que son recordados en el Judas Kai, suplantando sus nombres por el de Judas. Por eso cada año el Juda Kái va "dedicado" a una de las infames figuras mencionadas. En el 2009 en el ERF, le tocó el turno a Camilo Soarez (Secretario de Emergencia Nacional, con actuaciones muy controversiales y criticadas en su gestión).
Near midnight, comes one of the most exciting traditional games, which is the burning of Juda Kai, a doll filled with bombs and fireworks that detonate after reaching the flames. As the feast is San Juan (John the Baptist) -the one who baptized Jesus- the burning of Juda Kai is taken as an act of repudiation of Iscariot, the one who sold out Jesus for 12 pieces of gold. Previously, only we called Juda Kai and nothing more, but with the advent of democracy the people lost the fear of the political class, and are now corrupt politicians or public figures who somehow sad in this country or lead to rejection (in addition to freedom the people to expose what he feels), which are remembered in the Judas Kai, supplanting their names to that of Judas. So each year the Juda Kai is "dedicated" to one of the notorious figures mentioned. Finalmente ya a la media noche, otro de los más esperados: el tata ari jehasa (pasando encima del fuego). La creencia dice que al tener fe en que no se va a quemar al caminar sobre las brasas, pues no se sentirán dichas brasas. En el ERF he visto jóvenes movidos con alcohol más que con fe para pasar las brasas. A mí me tocó caminar encima de ellas en el 2002, en este mismo lugar. Sólo recuerdo que fue rápido porque di dos pasos y el resto fue casi una corrida.
Finally and at midnight, one of the most anticipated: the tata ari jehasa (walking over the fire). The popular belief says that having faith, it will not burn when walking on the coals, because they will not feel these coals. In the ERF I seen young mens moved with alcohol than with faith to walk over the coals. I got to walk on them in 2002, in the same place. Just remember that it was fast because I took two steps and the rest was almost a run.

Sí, llegó el tan ansiado 2010 para much@s porque es una excusa para cerrar un ciclo y comenzar uno nuevo con esa fehaciente credulidad de que el calendario va a regir sobre nuestro destino. Yo sinceramente del 2010 no espero nada. De igual manera, la noche previa es también el momento propicio para pasar en familia, reírse, recordar a los que no están, tomar, comer sin tapujos cosas que no comés generalmente en una sola noche del año, desinhibirse, felicitar a todo el mundo y que siga la fiesta, total al día siguiente son unos pocos los que trabajan.

Yes, came the much awaited 2010 for many people because it's an excuse to close a cycle and start a new one with this authentic credulity that the timing is going to rule over our destiny. I honestly do not expect anything about 2010. Anyway, the night before is also an opportune time to spend with family, laughing, remembering those who are not, drink, eat things that usually do not eat in any other night of the year, uninhibited, to cheers with everyone and to continue the party, because the next day are only a few who work.

Este año decidimos no pasar por el dolor de cabeza de decorar la mesa como si viniese a visitarnos Chiquitunga, no caímos en esa fancy parafernalia esta vez.
This year we decided to not take the headache out of decorating the table as if Joan Rivers (fashion police) come to visit us, we did not fall into a fancy paraphernalia this time.

Como es tradición de algunos años, Papá se encarga de las carnes al horno (su fuerte), mamá de las ensaladas y frutas que combinan y yo de las salsas.
As a tradition a few years, Dad is in charge of the meat in the oven (his strong ability), my mother in charge of salads and fruits and I to combine sauces.



Era ya 2010 y salimos a disfrutar de las ráfagas de viento fresco que paseaban por la calle Yegros. Qué Año nuevo más tranquilo, en familia, todos en la vereda, rescatando aquellas viejas tradiciones barriales (somos prácticamente los últimos en el barrio); y quitando de nuestra lista de actividades toda la superficialidad de las fiestas de fin de año con alcohol en descontrol, música estridente, humo, sudor y superpoblación. Mis hermanas y yo aún nos comportamos como niños (justificando que lo hacemos por nuestros sobrinos!).
It was 2010 now and we went out to enjoy the fresh wind gusts passing down the Yegros street. What a peaceful New Year, family, all on the sidewalk, rescuing those old traditions neighborhood (we're almost the last in the neighborhood), and removing from our list of activities all the shallowness of the holidays with uncontrolled alcohol drinking, loud music, smoke, sweat and overpopulation. My sisters and I still behave like children (justifying that we do it for our nephews!)
