Bienvenidos una vez más a este blog, a esta historia, a esta experiencia, y bienvenidos a este nuevo año. Muchas gracias por toda la compañía que me hacen desde su monitor en cada lectura, en cada comentario, y sobre todo en cada encuentro fuera de lo virtual, donde podemos estrechar manos, abrazarnos y conversar. Eso es lo importante que rescato, ya que si hoy en día soy esto que conocen, es gracias a Uds. y me debo a Uds. Por eso, antes de comenzar a hablar de Carayaó y su Fiesta Patronal, quisiera robarles unos minutos para hablar de Edilson Fernández (@edino1), un amigo de dicha ciudad quien alguna vez fue un amigo virtual más del Facebook, pero a quien conocí en persona en 2011. Recuerdo que los chicos de Rotaract Ajos me habían invitado para ir a hablar sobre fotografía en la Feria del Libro de Coronel Oviedo el año pasado, y una semana después me contacta Edilson para invitarme a hacer lo mismo, frente a 400 jóvenes estudiantes de la Universidad Nacional de Caaguazú en un campamento anual que realizan. En aquel encuentro, lo conocí y sinceramente me sentí muy halagado y contento de haber encontrado un joven noble y emprendedor. Fue así que siempre me invitaba a conocer "su valle" como él lo dice, y no pude hacerlo antes, hasta la primera semana de este nuevo año donde fui a la Fiesta Patronal de Carayaó. Edilson trabaja en el Telecentro Comunitario, y personalmente se encargó de transformar de a poco su ciudad, en una ciudad digital. Tal es así que en gran parte del centro de la coqueta y pequeña ciudad de Carayaó funcionaba un wi-fi gratuito. Pero Edilson en este viaje me dijo que "la gente no valora lo que es gratuito", y por ello, tuvo que cerrar las puertas a ese Internet gratis debido al mal uso de algunos cuantos, y sólo permitir el acceso de forma comunitaria entre los que aportan, de manera a no sólo pagar el servicio, sino que también los equipos que a veces pueden sufrir desperfectos y otras atenciones que requiere el uso de la red. Sinceramente para mí, es admirable el trabajo que hace en su comunidad, y por ello quería también hacérselo saber a Uds. porque existen muchas personas como él que fui conociendo a lo largo de todos estos viajes y recorridos que hice en nuestro país, donde se forja una nueva generación que sin lugar a dudas logrará grandes cambios en la mentalidad en el futuro. Y Carayaó, una ciudad ubicada a 33Kms. de Coronel Oviedo, este año no sólo vibró una vez más con su Fiesta Patronal (del 5 al 8 de enero) que es una de las más antiguas del país, sino que también transmitió por Internet gran parte de sus actividades taurinas, gracias a las ganas y empeño que le puso Edilson para hacerlo posible y sobre todo gracias al apoyo de un auspiciante de la ciudad que fue Oasis Bebidas. Personalmente puedo decir que no conocía otra fiesta de este estilo en el país que haya dado el salto de transmitir online en vivo y en directo para todo Paraguay y el mundo. Espero que el próximo año sea igual o mejor y que más Paraguayos que no pueden viajar hasta la ciudad o aquellos que viven fuera de nuestro suelo patrio, también puedan disfrutar de una fiesta que tuvo de todo: caballos, toros, asado y música. Esto es Carayaó.

Once again, welcome to my blog, to read this story, this experience and welcome to this new year. Thank you very much for joining me behind your screen for each posting, each comment and most of all, for each encounter beyond the virtual, where we can actually shake hands, give a hug and have a conversation. This is what I find the most important of this, as thanks to you all, I am the person who you know and I owe you. Therefore, before starting to tell you about Carayaó and the Patron Saint Feast, I would like to take few minutes of your time and tell you about Edilson Fernández (@edino1), a friend from Carayaó who once was just another virtual Facebook friend until I got to meet him in 2011. I remember how the kids from Rotaract Ajos had invited me over to speak about photography at the book fair in Coronel Oviedo last year and a week later Edilson got in touch to invite me to do the same at an annual camp Universidad Nacional in Caaguazú helds for 400 students. I got to know him at the camp and I sincerely felt very flattered and happy to have met such a noble and entrepreneurial young man. He always invited me to come and see "his valley" as he calls it and I wasn't able to take up his invitation until the first week of this new year when I went to the Patron Saint Feast of Carayaó. Edilson works in the Community Centre and he's personally in charge of transforming his town into a digital town. As a result, most of the centre of his charming little town already has free wi-fi. However, during this trip, Edilson tells me that "people take free things for granted" and how he had to close down the free internet access due to some misuse and only allowing access to the participating community members who do not only pay for the service but also for the equipment which can have problems and other maintenance required for the use of internet. I find his community work sincerely admirable and this is why I wanted to mention about it as there are many people like him I have come to known throughout my travels in our country where a new generation is shaping and will without a doubt achieve great changes for the future mentality. And Carayaó, a town located 33km from Coronel Oviedo, turns 226 years old and it did not only vibrate once again with its Patron Saint Feast (from January 5th to 8th) which is one of the oldest in the country (though it's only official for 32 years now) but they also streamed most of the celebration over the internet, thanks to the hard work of Edilson and most of all, the support Oasis Drinks from Carayaó who sponsored the event. As far as I know, I hadn't heard of another celebration of this kind in the country which had gone all the way to stream for Paraguay and the world. I hope next year they will keep it up or make it even better and that more Paraguayans who can't go there or live out of the country can also enjoy the celebration that had it all: horses, bulls, barbecue and music. This is Carayaó.

14:54 - El colectivo que me llevaba a Carayaó no salía a las 10:00 como me dijeron en la Terminal, sino que 5 minutos antes, y lastimosamente no llegué a tiempo porque ese Domingo 8 de enero tuve que esperar bastante un 38 que me lleve hasta el epicentro del transporte, por eso llegué bastante tarde. Edilson antes de llevarme a la Jineteada, me hizo conocer uno de los lugares más espectaculares que conocí en el país: la cantera de Carayaó.
14:54 - The bus taking me to Carayaó did not leave at 10am as I was told but took off 5min earlier and unfortunately I did not get to the terminal on time as that Sunday 8th I had hard time catching the bus number 38 taking me there. Edilson, before taking me to the Rodeo, took me to see one of the most amazing places I have seen in Paraguay: the Carayaó quarry.

Carayaó es una ciudad donde existe mucha agua salada y es difícil encontrar pozos de agua potable. Hoy en día la ciudad no cuenta con este servicio, y sólo una vez por semana reciben cargamentos del vital líquido. La franja blanca que ven es donde anteriormente estaba el nivel de este paraíso de agua cristalina con una profundidad de 75 metros, y que era utilizado para abastecer a la ciudad, pero en detrimento de la naturaleza. Por eso, dejaron de hacerlo, para mantener la belleza de este lugar. Mientras estaba fotografiando, tres camionetas se acercaron, y en una llegaba el Vicepresidente de la República Federico Franco, también para conocer la cantera. Lo conocí en persona, cruzamos palabras y le hablé de uno de mis próximos destinos similares a éste en el país, pero que no lo mencionaré hoy para darles la sorpresa.
Carayaó is a town where there is a plenty of salty water but it's hard to come across with drinking water. Currently the town has no drinking water and they only receive a weekly shipment. The white strip you can see is where the level of the crystal water used to reach at 75m of depth and it was used to supply the town but to the detriment of the nature. This is why they stopped doing it, to conserve the beauty of the place. While I was taking pictures, three vans showed up and in one of them there was Federico Franco, the Vice President of the Republic who also came to visit the quarry. We chatted a bit and I told him about a similar place I plan on visiting soon but I won't mention it now to keep it a surprise.

15:35 - Un asado a la olla al estilo ymá como primer plato nos brindó energía para soportar el día. Además nos deleitamos con una porción de asado a la estaca, muy apreciado en la región.

The riders make a real show at the central bullring, raising the dust produced by the drought. It was announced that the firemen could not wet the soil as they were putting out fire at the National Park of Caazapá.

Varios jinetes de diversas caballerías de todo el país se sumaron a esta fiesta, aunque en menor cantidad que otros años porque ese día en el sur el encuentro de jinetes también se sentía en Santiago Misiones, con la tradicional Fiesta de la Doma y el Folclore en Tacuaty.
Several riders from different cavalries from all around the country joined the celebration although more had shown up for the previous years, this time it overlapped with riders' gathering in Santiago Misiones where the traditional Breaking-In and Folklore Celebration was held in Tacuaty.

Entre las agrupaciones se encontraban no sólo personas mayores o jóvenes sino también amazonas (como esta joven de Simón Bolívar, ubicada a 18km de Carayaó) y padres de familia.
Among the groups there weren't just old or young people but also horsewomen (like this young woman from Simón Bolívar, 18km from Carayaó) and family men.

Don Enrique Ortíz (76 años), no sólo cabalgó ese día como uno más de los jóvenes jinetes, lo cual para mí fue impresionante porque demostraba su experiencia muy latente, sino que se encargaba atentamente en el exitoso desarrollo de la fiesta. Luego brindó unas palabras de agradecimiento y ánimos para su pueblo.
Enrique Ortíz (76 years old), did not only ride that day just like one of the youngest riders which I found impressing as he showed his great experience but also carefully paid attention to all the details of the celebration. Afterwards he shared some words of gratitude and support for his town.

El Coliseo tiene una capacidad para 3000 almas y su construcción en cemento fue finalizada en diciembre de 2011. Hoy toda la ciudad está de fiesta, en esta última corrida de toros y cierre de los festejos patronales.
The ring fits 3000 souls and the cement construction was finished in December 2011. Today all the town is celebrating the last bull fight and the closing of the patron feast.

En 2010 había visto por última vez el Show de "Los Hermanos Locos" Ka'i ha Pakú en el Festival del Ovechá Ragué. De nuevo aquí los encuentro, animando a la gente con su peculiar y único sentido del humor.
In 2010 I had seen the show of the "Crazy Brothers" Ka'i ha Pakú at the Ovechá Ragué Festival. Here I run into them again, cheering up the crowd with their peculiar and unique sense of humour.

21:04 - Comenzó la corrida de toros y los Toreros de Carlos "Matador" Giménez de Paraguarí, dieron muestra de su destreza.

21:34 - Más de treinta minutos les llevó a los toreros encargarse de "Retobado", un animal que les dio mucha pelea ocasionando por momentos la impaciencia del público. Aquí uno de los toreros hace un giro en el aire y se lo monta, robando así aplausos de la gente.

Yo me despido de Carayaó y su fiesta patronal, pues mi amiga Marta Dutil (@libelula_du) fue a buscarme desde su ciudad Coronel Oviedo para acompañarme hasta la terminal.

I say good-bye to Carayaó and the patron celebration as my friend Marta Dutil (@libelula_du) comes to pick me up from Coronel Oviedo where she lives to take me to the terminal.

23:26 - A pocos kilómetros entre Carayaó y Oviedo, una barrera policial en un oscuro lugar nos detiene, donde nos demuestra la Policía Nacional que también cumple con su trabajo. Aprovecho para hablar con el comisario y pedirle permiso para hacer la fotografía que están viendo, lo cual accedió gentilmente porque me dijo que conoció mi trabajo de las estaciones de tren, cuando me vio en Telefuturo en aquel reportaje que me hicieron en diciembre. No me lo esperaba y quedé impresionado del alcance que tuvo esa nota porque el comisario lo había visto en la localidad de San Roque (ubicada al norte de Alto Paraná) antes de su traslado a esta región.
23:26 - Few kilometres away between Carayaó and Oviedo, a police control pulls us over, showing us that they do do their job. I take the chance and ask the captain permission to take a picture, which he kindly agrees to as he recognised the work I did with the train stations that the TV channel Telefuturo broadcast in December. I did not expect this and I was impressed by the coverage that interview had had, given that the captain had seen it in San Roque (north of Alto Paraná) before being transferred to Oviedo.

Gracias una vez más por tomarte el tiempo de leerme, espero que en cualquier momento del año visites esta hermosa ciudad como todas las que tenemos, donde cada una tiene su encanto. Espero que Carayaó logre la meta de conseguir su tan ansiada agua dulce, donde tanta falta hace y donde me es triste ver cuando dinero para potenciar el país se gasta en otras cosas y no en los propios pueblos y su gente. La gente de Carayaó peca de hospitalaria, es gente que te saluda con un "mba'eichapa" seas extraño o uno más del pueblo, es gente que te hace sentir en casa. Muchas gracias Edilson por la invitación a la fiesta de tu ciudad, deseo volver a visitarla nuevamente este año y acompañado de más gente amiga que tenga ganas de viajar por el país. Gracias a Anna Harkko quien hace un esfuerzo gigante y desinteresado ayudando en la traducción. Thank you once again for taking your time to read me, I hope that at any time of the year you'd visit the beautiful town of Carayaó, beautiful as all of the cities we have, where each have their charm. I hope Carayaó will reach its goal to get the long-awaited sweet water which they very much need, it's sad for me to see all the money in the country being spent in other things and not in the villages and the people. The people of Carayaó is overly welcoming, everyone greets you with "mba'eichapa" (what's up?) whether you are a stranger or another local, they truly make you feel home. XII Festival Latinoamericano de la Doma y el Folklore Tacuaty 2011

XII Latin American Festival of Rodeo and Folklore

Luego de haber dejado atrás las hermosas guaranias que siguieron cantándose después del trepidar de los tambores de Kamba Cua 2011 hasta tarde en la madrugada, me embarqué rumbo al sur con mis amigos Ariane, Flor y Omar. Como sabrán, a inicios de cada Enero desde hace doce años en la estancia Tacuaty ubicada en la ciudad de Santiago -departamento de Misiones-, se realiza el conocido "Festival Latinoamericano de la Doma y el Folklore". En la semana nos decidimos y nos fuimos ahí, utilizando la Ruta 1 que nos brindó hermosos paisajes, Es una verdadera fiesta que conjuga danza, costumbres y tradiciones para deleitar la vista, música de diversos puntos campestres del Mercosur para deleitar el oído, sin dejar de lado la gastronomía local que aporta su encanto, para deleitar al olfato y al gusto. La demostración de destreza, las usuales faenas que se realizan en el campo, bailes típicos de las regiones, música sertaneja, chamamé, polca, guaranias, asado, chorizo y otras cosas que cautivan a cualquier persona que en un efímero momento se permita intercambiarlos por el caos, la monotonía y el calor de la ciudad al que están acostumbrados. Incluso una lluvia torrencial se hizo presente, en la fiesta de esta tierra que está marcada por sus tradiciones. En este fotopost, tengo el honor de compartir imágenes de mi amigo Omar, quien luego de mucho tiempo, decidió realizar de nuevo algunos disparos con su cámara. Bien por él!

Having left behind the beautiful sung of the guaranias that followed after the trepidation of the Kamba Cua 2011 drums late into the night, I embarked southbound with my friends Ariane, Flor and Omar. As you know, at the beginning of every January since twelve years in Tacuaty, located in the city of Santiago -Department of Misiones- they made the famous "Latin American Festival of Rodeo and Folklore". In the week we decided and to went there, using the Route 1 that gave us beautiful landscapes It is a feast that combines dance, customs and traditions to please the eye, music from different parts of the Mercosur countryside to delight the ear, without forgetting the local cuisine provided by its charm, to delight the nose and taste. The demonstration of skill, the usual tasks that are performed in the field, region dances, country music, chamamé, polka guaranias, roast meat, sausage and other things that allow to anyone who's in a fleeting moment can exchange it for the chaos, the monotony and heat of the city to which they are accustomed. Even a big rain was present at the feast of this land that is marked by its traditions. In this fotopost, I have the honor of sharing images of my friend Omar, who after a long time, decided to hold back some shots with his camera. Good for him!

Mitad de mañana y se sentía un calor agobiante, pero el público supo acompañar con alegría y aplausos desde las graderías que estaban cubiertas con telas de media sombra.
Mid-morning and we felt the heat very oppressive, but the public knew how to accompanied with joy and applause from the stands that were covered with semi-shade fabrics.

Mientras las nubes se ponían grises y se sentían vientos de cambio, anunciando de forma aún muy temprana la cercanía de la lluvia.
