Nueva Londres es una pequeña localidad de Caaguazú, situada a menos de 140 Kms de Asunción. Anteriormente se llamaba Nueva Australia, porque fue fundada por inmigrantes británicos de Australia, de nombres Ricardo Smith y Juan Kennedy. Su fiesta patronal en honor al "Niño Jesús" se realiza cada 25 de Diciembre. Mi amiga Marta Dutil (@libelula_du) me avisa días antes sobre esta celebración, y fue en Navidad de 2011 que nos dirigimos con @fanyboga a conocer la "Fiesta del Tujú" (Tujú es lodo en guaraní), caracterizada por ser una fiesta en el barro, sí, mucho lodo y diversión popular entre los pobladores y visitantes, quienes no tienen ningún problema de venir a ensuciarse, en un ambiente de alegría. Todo comenzó hace 40 años aproximadamente -me cuenta un habitante de la ciudad- cuando en la plaza una vez luego de la corrida de toros, como broma entre amigos, subían a cualquiera de ellos sobre una mesa de la cantina y les hacían comprar cerveza y los bañaban con ese líquido. De esta forma, la gente terminaba empapada, embarrada, y ahí comenzaba una tradición que iría evolucionando a través de los años, cuando reemplazaron la bebida alcohólica por agua, debido a su costo. Luego se volvió un acontecimiento al que se sumaban extraños y visitantes, la idea era terminar empapados y jugando en barro. Como es también tradicional en las fiestas patronales de nuestro país, todo comienza días antes con las misas por el Santo Patrono, las corridas de toro, la fiesta social (en este caso en la Nochebuena) y el día de Navidad se cierra con la última corrida de toros y la Fiesta del Tujú. Pero antes de mostrarte gente totalmente embarrada, comenzaré con la última corrida de toros, que no tenía desperdicios. Acompañáme, y no traigas tu mejor ropa porque te vas a ensuciar.

Nueva Londres is a small town in Caaguazú, about 140km away from Asunción. It used to be called Nueva Australia, as it was founded by two British inmigrants who came from Australia, called Ricardo Smith and Juan Kennedy. The feast to honor “Baby Jesus” is held every December 25th. A friend of mine, Marta Dutil (@libelula_du) tells me about this celebration few days before, so on Christmas of 2011 we headed with @fanyboga to learn more about the famous “Tujú Feast” (tujú means mud in guaraní, our ancient language) which is literally a mud party with lots of mud and fun, along with locals and visitors who don’t mind getting dirty in a very cheerful atmosphere. It all began some 40 years ago, -a local tells me- when once at the central square of the city after a bull fight, as a joke between friends, they would stand on top of the bar table bathing each other in beer. Then, the people would end up soaked and covered up with mud, giving a start to a tradition which was to evolve within the years by changing beer for water, due to the cost of this. Later on, it became an event where strangers and visitors would come and join in getting all soaked and playing in mud. As the tradition goes for the season celebrations in our country, everything begins days before with masses, bull fights, social gatherings (Christmas Eve) and Christmas Day ends with a final bull fight and the Tujú Feast. Before showing the people all soaked up, I shall start with the final bull fight where nothing was spared. Join me and don’t bring your best clothes, you’re about to get dirty.

10:40 - Finalmente llegamos a la entrada de la ciudad, ubicada a unos 500 metros antes del Peaje de Coronel Oviedo (partiendo desde Asunción). Pueden verse las banderas Británica y Australiana en su cartel, demostrando también el fuerte arraigo a sus ancestros que optaron como segunda tierra a nuestro país.

Both the British and Australian flags can be seen in the town emblem, showing the strong ties the town holds to their ancestors who chose our country to settle their second home.

11:05 - Luego de transitar los 8Kms de camino asfaltado desde la ruta, nos dirigimos al Corral Don Moisés Cohene, lugar donde se lleva a cabo la corrida de toros. En el exterior, un hombre se encarga de preparar los tradicionales Asados a la estaca.

Con un costo accesible de 50.000 Gs cada estaca y calculado para tres personas de buen comer, el asado se convierte en una delicia para el paladar y su aroma inunda los alrededores.
For a fair price of 50,000 Gs for a stake enough for three people, the roasted meat delights the palate and the smell of barbecue fills the air.

Un hermoso día pero con un extenuante sol nos acompañó, y la plaza de toros se llena de gente de Nueva Londres y otras ciudades. El techo de plástico de este año, será reemplazado con uno permanente en el 2012.
The day is beautiful despite of harsh sun, the arena is packed with people from Nueva Londres and elsewhere. The plastic roof used this year will be replaced by a permanent one in 2012.

Más de mil personas disfrutaban de la música de la Banda Juvenil de Unión de San Pedro en la Plaza de Toros Don Moisés Cohene.

"Conejito" Díaz, el joven Marito Castillo y Venancio Rolón "la pantera negra" fueron los toreros encargados de darle vida y lucha a la corrida de toros.

Marito salta desde la valla protectora del ruedo, sobre la cabeza del animal, acción que deleita al público presente que explota en gritos y aplausos.

La práctica y el valor de nuestros toreros se demuestra en esta lucha cuerpo a cuerpo. Aquí Conejito Díaz es arremetido con fuerza por el animal, pero los duros golpes en el piso son moneda corriente y casi imperceptibles para estos valientes jóvenes que se ganan la vida con esta actividad.
The training and the values of our bullfighters are shown in this sport fighting body-against-body. Here, Conejito Diaz is lashed down by the animal, but these knock-outs are common and almost imperceptible for these brave young men who make a living out of this activity.

Venancio es arrastrado por este toro bravo, pero rápidamente logra levantarse para seguir con el juego. Las toreadas paraguayas son conocidas en el mundo taurino como "recorte", ya que se conforman solamente por acrobacias y muestra de destreza, sin maltratar o matar a los animales como en las toreadas de otros países.
Venancio is dragged down by the bull, but quickly manages to get back on his feet and keep up with the game. The Paraguayan bullfights are known in the world of bullfighting as “recorte” as they only consist on acrobatic demonstration of their skills without hurting or killing the animal unlike the bullfights carried out in other countries.

15:18 - Luego del almuerzo con un buen asado a la estaca, la corrida continuaba y se realizaban subastas de animales como toros, ovejas y otros. Mientras tanto, la Plaza Central de Nueva Londres se comenzaba a llenar de gente, esperando el inicio de la Fiesta del Tujú. Todo era alegría y fiesta.
15:18 - After having roasted stake for lunch, the bull race continues by putting up bulls, sheep and other animals for auction. Meanwhile, the central square of Nueva Londres begins to pack up with people waiting for the Tujú Feast to begin. It’s all about joy and celebration.

15:44 - Llegaron los bomberos, llegó el agua, llegó la música y comenzó la tradicional Fiesta del Tujú. La gente con ropa, sin ropa, no importa cómo están vestidos, se deja mojar completamente por el agua, no sólo para aplacar el extenuante calor, sino también por el ambiente de diversión que se desata.
15:44 - The firefighters arrived and so did the water and the traditional music and the Tujú Feast is about to begin. People with or without clothes, no matter how they dressed up are completely soaked, not only to fight against the high temperature but for the party atmosphere that now breaks out.

Cientos de personas disfrutan del agua, que comienza como un verdadero carnaval, acompañados por una banda de música y un animador quien constantemente los alienta a que "ensuciarse hace bien". En minutos, la tierra de la plaza se convertirá en barro, y todos a disfrutar!.
Hundreds of people enjoy the water, which is turning into a real carnival, accompanied by a brass band and an entertainer constantly encouraging the people to get dirty as "getting dirty is good". Within minutes, the soil turns at the square turns into mud and everybody is having fun!

En este momento, lo mejor es estar embarrado, mientras el agua sigue cayendo. La diversión entre los participantes es única, esta es La Fiesta del Tujú, y cada joven "londinense" está orgulloso de formar parte de una tradición más antigua que ellos.
At this point, it is the best to get all covered up by mud while the water continues pouring. The excitement among the participants is unique, this is the Tujú Feast and every young "Londoner" is proud of being part of a tradition older than them.

Todo se desarrolla como una verdadera fiesta, donde jóvenes, niños y mujeres se dejan llevar por el jolgorio. No hay lugar para la mala onda, y todos deben ensuciarse o dejarse ensuciar.
It all turns out like in a real party, where the young, the children and the women get carried away having fun. There is no place for rudeness and everyone should get dirty or let others to throw dirt on them.

Una pareja se arrojó al barro juntas, y luego se abrazan en medio de salpicones, gritos y diversión.
A couple jumped into the mud together and then they hug in the middle of the mud, screaming and fun.

Nadie se salva de ensuciarse, y los amigos son los mejores policías en este caso que traen al más limpio del grupo para unirse a la fiesta. Si estás dentro de la plaza, te vas a ensuciar; uno simplemente debe dejarse llevar y entregarse al grupo, es diversión sana y alegre.
No one can get away from the mud and friends are the best police for the case, they drag the cleanest ones to join the party. If you are within the square, you’ll get dirty so you’re better off just letting go and joining the group for some good fun.

Un turista visitante de Australia (y su otro compañero), también recibieron "la bienvenida" de parte del grupo a pedido del animador en el escenario. Australianos e Ingleses suelen venir de visita a la ciudad y más aún en esta celebración, pues, parte de la historia de su país vino a parar a este recóndito lugar del mundo.
A tourist visiting from Australia (and a friend of his), were also "welcomed" by the group at the request of the entertainer on the stage. Australians and British are coming to visit the town especially during the celebration as part of their history back home came over to this hidden place in the world.

Rostros felices y sonrientes, además de embarrados, es lo que nos ofrece esta verdadera fiesta de amigos y conocidos, siempre en un marco de respeto y sin peleas. Es lo sano de la Fiesta del Tujú.
Happy, smiley and muddy faces is what this party offers friends and acquaintances within an atmosphere of respect and no fights. This is the wholesome aspect of the Tujú Feast.

Y así culmina para mí esta visita a una gran fiesta, donde la gente joven se une tal como lo hicieron sus padres, y lo harán sus hijos. A pesar de la negativa del nuevo párroco de la Iglesia para la realización de la fiesta, la gente Londinense se niega también a dejar pasar su tradición.
And as my visit comes to its end, it is where the young people gather just as their parents did and so will their children. Despite of the new pastor of the church denying to carry on with the party, the Nueva Londoners also refuse to let their tradition go.

Muchas gracias por interesarte en conocer esta historia, esta ciudad, esta gente linda y su tradición, espero que en la próxima Navidad de 2012 estés compartiendo esta verdadera fiesta de algarabía y camaradería. Thank you very much for reading the story of this town, its beautiful people and their tradition, I hope that for next Christmas 2012 you’ll come and join this party of true joy and companionship. Nueva Londres, a town of kind, humble and hard-working people is making its way to tourism along the beaches in Tebicuary-mi, the pleasant green surroundings, the history of the town and the bullfighting party. It would only need some details to become a must stop of an adventurous traveller, such as a petrol station and some night life. Nueva Londres, along with its two traditional clubs: "Guaraní" and "Nueva Londres" and its 4000 inhabitants is without a doubt one of those marvellous places in Paraguay that with a seemingly simple party it draws more the attention of foreign tourists than local Paraguayans. XII Festival Latinoamericano de la Doma y el Folklore Tacuaty 2011

XII Latin American Festival of Rodeo and Folklore

Luego de haber dejado atrás las hermosas guaranias que siguieron cantándose después del trepidar de los tambores de Kamba Cua 2011 hasta tarde en la madrugada, me embarqué rumbo al sur con mis amigos Ariane, Flor y Omar. Como sabrán, a inicios de cada Enero desde hace doce años en la estancia Tacuaty ubicada en la ciudad de Santiago -departamento de Misiones-, se realiza el conocido "Festival Latinoamericano de la Doma y el Folklore". En la semana nos decidimos y nos fuimos ahí, utilizando la Ruta 1 que nos brindó hermosos paisajes, Es una verdadera fiesta que conjuga danza, costumbres y tradiciones para deleitar la vista, música de diversos puntos campestres del Mercosur para deleitar el oído, sin dejar de lado la gastronomía local que aporta su encanto, para deleitar al olfato y al gusto. La demostración de destreza, las usuales faenas que se realizan en el campo, bailes típicos de las regiones, música sertaneja, chamamé, polca, guaranias, asado, chorizo y otras cosas que cautivan a cualquier persona que en un efímero momento se permita intercambiarlos por el caos, la monotonía y el calor de la ciudad al que están acostumbrados. Incluso una lluvia torrencial se hizo presente, en la fiesta de esta tierra que está marcada por sus tradiciones. En este fotopost, tengo el honor de compartir imágenes de mi amigo Omar, quien luego de mucho tiempo, decidió realizar de nuevo algunos disparos con su cámara. Bien por él!

Having left behind the beautiful sung of the guaranias that followed after the trepidation of the Kamba Cua 2011 drums late into the night, I embarked southbound with my friends Ariane, Flor and Omar. As you know, at the beginning of every January since twelve years in Tacuaty, located in the city of Santiago -Department of Misiones- they made the famous "Latin American Festival of Rodeo and Folklore". In the week we decided and to went there, using the Route 1 that gave us beautiful landscapes It is a feast that combines dance, customs and traditions to please the eye, music from different parts of the Mercosur countryside to delight the ear, without forgetting the local cuisine provided by its charm, to delight the nose and taste. The demonstration of skill, the usual tasks that are performed in the field, region dances, country music, chamamé, polka guaranias, roast meat, sausage and other things that allow to anyone who's in a fleeting moment can exchange it for the chaos, the monotony and heat of the city to which they are accustomed. Even a big rain was present at the feast of this land that is marked by its traditions. In this fotopost, I have the honor of sharing images of my friend Omar, who after a long time, decided to hold back some shots with his camera. Good for him!

Mitad de mañana y se sentía un calor agobiante, pero el público supo acompañar con alegría y aplausos desde las graderías que estaban cubiertas con telas de media sombra.
Mid-morning and we felt the heat very oppressive, but the public knew how to accompanied with joy and applause from the stands that were covered with semi-shade fabrics.

La mayor parte de los integrantes del Grupo de Ballet Remembranzas bailan música Paraguaya en medio del ruedo central, brindando un espectáculo donde recorrieron todo el espacio y deleitaron a todas las miradas.
Most of the members of the Paraguayan Ballet Group Remembranzas dance music in the middle of the central arena, presenting a show which toured all the space and make all eyes delighted.

En Tacuaty también hay espacio para vendedores que ingresan con la esperanza de poder hacer una buena venta, sobre todo en el caso de este sombrerero, cuyo producto fue más que necesario por el sol que adquiría más fuerza.
In Tacuaty there is also room for vendors who enter with the hope of making a good sale, especially in the case of this hat seller, whose product was more than necessary as far the sun was getting more strength.

El Delegado del Jinete cubre los ojos del caballo que será domado, mientras éste está atado con piolas por el Palenquero, para mantenerlo tranquilo cerca del palenque.
The Deputy of the Rider covers the horse's eyes to be tamed, while it is attached with lanyards by the Palenquero to keep the horse quiet aside the post.

La calma antes de la tormenta. El domador Brasilero ya está sobre el caballo y sólo aguarda el momento en que se lo suelta y se le da un chicotazo para que desate su bravura.

Quizás un poco alejado de la tradición porque la seguridad es primordial para tener un espectáculo sin hechos que lamentar, el domador brasilero quien anteriormente realizó la primera doma, refuerza su tobillera con una cinta de cuero.
Perhaps a little away from the tradition because safety is first to have in account in a show without facts to regret, the Brazilian keeper who previously held the first dressage, strengthens ankle with a leather strap.

Mientras las nubes se ponían grises y se sentían vientos de cambio, anunciando de forma aún muy temprana la cercanía de la lluvia.
