Fin de semana de descanso en la Estancia "El Paraíso" de Piribebuy

Retreat weekend over at the countryhouse "The Paradise"

En varios fines de semana en que viajé por nuestro hermoso país, no me había tomado un tiempo de descanso aún. Por eso, cuando recibí la invitación de mis compañeros de colegio (el Experimental Paraguay-Brasil, CEPB) para ir de nuevo como es habitual a la Estancia "El Paraíso", no dudé un segundo. Habitual es para mis compañeros, porque yo hacía como 10 años que no volvía a ese lugar. La estancia está en la ciudad de Piribebuy (70 kms de Asunción), y pertenece al papá de un compañero. El Dr. Ávila así como todos los padres de estos compañeros que formaron parte de 6 años inolvidables de nuestras vidas, es también para nosotros como un segundo papá. Siempre que vamos a su estancia somos bien tratados, no nos falta nada, tenemos paz y tranquilidad, haciendo honor al nombre de "Paraíso". Por eso hoy quiero compartir con Uds. un viaje donde no tendremos personas, fiestas, tradiciones, etc, sino que tendremos naturaleza y aire puro. Por eso, quisiera que este POST sea para invitarlos a que si tienen oportunidad de viajar unos cuantos kilómetros lejos del smog, bocinazos y embotellamientos, lo hagan. Este POST también busca que mis amigos que gustan de la fotografía abran los ojos ante los mínimos detalles, busco también darles algunas recomendaciones o bien explicar datos técnicos sobre algunas fotos. Asi que disculpen si el lenguaje en esas partes es poco convencional.

In several weekends that I had traveled around our beautiful country, I had not taken some time off yet. So when I received the invitation of my classmates (the Experimental Paraguay-Brazil, CEPB) to go back, as usual, to stay at the country house "The Paradise" I did not hesitate for a second. Usual, for my classmates, because its been 10 years since last time I went there. The country house is located in the city of Piribebuy (70 kms from Asuncion), and belongs to the father of one classmate. Dr. Avila like all the parents of classmates that were part of 6 unforgettable years of our lives is like a second dad for us. Whenever we stay we are well treated, we have everything we need, we have peace and tranquility, making honor to the name of "Paradise." So today I want to share with you a journey where we wont have people, festivals, traditions, etc., but we would have nature and fresh air. So I would like this post to be an invitation if you have the opportunity to travel a few miles away from the smog, horns and rush hour, you shoud do it. The POST also seeks that my friends who like photography open their eyes to the smallest details, I also give you some recommendations or explain technical details on some photos. So I apologize if the language is unconventional in some parts.

19:14 - Después de un placentero viaje de un par de horas en colectivo, llegué hasta un lugar de la ruta que une Piribebuy con Paraguarí. En ese momento, se aproximaba una caravana rumbo a Piribebuy porque en esa fecha se festejaba el Ñandejara Guasú en dicha ciudad.
19:14 - After a pleasant drive of a couple of hours by bus, I got to a place on the route where Piribebuy with Paraguarí unite. At that time, a convoy approached going torse Piribebuy because on that date the Ñandejara Guasú was celebrated in the city.

Un poco de autobombo. Aproveché esos minutos aguardando a que vengan a buscarme, porque el colectivo que iba hasta el Distrito de Naranjo ya no pasaba a esa hora. Esta es mi temática para 2011, donde acompañado de mi equipo y un bolsito con ropa trataré de viajar a donde pueda, a lo largo y ancho del país, mientras sé que son apenas 51 fines de semana pero que intentaré de aprovecharlos al máximo. En esta fotografía utilicé un minitrípode, apertura en f4, velocidad 1/160, un postprocesado en Photoshop que se llama Magical Effect y finalmente fui graduando valores de Niveles y Contraste a mi antojo.
A little self-promotion. I took advantage of those few minutes while I waited to get picked up, because the bus that went to the District of Naranjo did not pass at that time. This is my issue for 2011, where along with my equipment and a small bag of clothes I will try to travel everywhere I can, across the country, while I know there are only 51 weekends but I'll try to make the most of it. In this photograph I used a mini tripod, aperture in f4, speed 1/160, post-processing in Photoshop called Magical Effect and was finally graduate levels and contrast settings as desired.

00:52 AM - Pasaron casi 5 horas desde mi llegada, en que le di descanso a la máquina de fotos y me puse a cocinar para mis compañeros. Luego de la cena, y una sobremesa recordando anécdotas del colegio y del presente, un pequeño grupo nos animanos a ir hasta el cerro frente a la propiedad, y admirar las estrellas desde su cima. En el camino encontramos esta araña que tejía una gran tela, y para la fotografía utilicé trípode y linternas. Debido al viento no podía usar velocidades bajas. Es importante cambiar el balance de blancos de acuerdo a la linterna, porque hoy en día existen las que tienen luz halógena y para ello usamos una temperatura más cálida o viceversa.
00:52 AM - Almost 5 hours since my arrival had passed, in wich I gave a rest to the photo machine and started to cook for my teammates. After dinner, and recalling anecdotes from school and the present, a small group of us decide it to go up the hill in front of the property and watch the stars from the top. On the way we found this spider weaving a large web, for photography I used a tripod and flashlights. Because the wind could not use low speeds. It is important to change the white balance according to the flashlight, because today there are those with halogen light and for that we use a warmer temperature or vice versa.

02:20 - Alcanzamos la cima del cerro. Nos encontrábamos Giovanni, Emilio, Leti, José y yo disfrutando de una luna rojiza que se iba escondiendo y dejándonos cubiertos por una sábana negra llena de miles de motas. Hicimos algunas tomas y jugamos con linternas (fotos en las otras cámaras), y luego nos recostamos a admirar la grandiosidad de nuestra vía láctea. Para esta toma no podía usar velocidades más rápidas, por lo tanto el retardo junto con la suave brisa condicionaron la buena nitidez. Fueron 20segundos de exposición, con ISO elevado y apertura en f3.2.
02:20 - We reach the top of the hill. We were Giovanni, Emilio, Leti, Jose and I enjoying a red moon that was hiding and leaving us covered by a black sheet full of thousands of motes. We made some shots and played with the flashlight (pics in the other cameras), and then lying down to admire the grandeur of our Milky Way. For this shot I could not use faster speeds, hence the delay with the gentle breeze conditioned the sharpness. Was 20sec of exposure, high ISO and f3.2 of aperture.

03:37 - Estuvimos un buen tiempo aprovechando el tranquilo paisaje lunar que ofrecía la cima del cerro, pero ya teníamos que regresar. Al pie del mismo luego del descenso, me atreví a hacer esperar al grupo y tomar 3 fotografías de un paisaje característico de nuestro país. Tuve la suerte que en ésta -la segunda- toma, una estrella fugaz pasó en el fondo para sorpresa de todos. En esta imagen, también utilicé trípode y 13 segundos de exposición, en donde se percibe la claridad de la luna llena que seguía escondiéndose detrás del horizonte.
03:37 - We were there for a good time taking advantage of the tranquil moonscape offered by the top of the hill, but had to return. At the down of the hill afer a rest I dared to make the group wait while I took 3 photos of a typical landscape of our country. I was lucky on this one, the second-shot, a shooting star in the background passed to everyone's surprise. In this picture, I also used a tripod and 13 seconds of exposure, where you perceive the brightness of the full moon was hiding behind the skyline.

Me dormí alrededor de las 05:30 en el corredor jeré de la casa, sentado en una silla, con frío y aguardando que amanezca porque quería ver si había bruma emanando del arroyo o en el cerro. Nada de eso pasó, así que cerré los ojos y se fueron un par de horas. Cuando desperté tuve la imponente vista del cerro quien como un mudo altar se erigía y me observaba. I fell asleep around 5:30 in the corridor of the house, sitting in a chair, feeling cold and waiting for dawn I wanted to see if there was fog emanating from the stream or on the hill . None of that happened, so I closed my eyes and couple of hours went by. When I woke up the breathtaking view of the mountain that, as an altar stood silent and still to watched me. Wake to this view inspires you to sleep only to wake up once again with this view. (Please note, panoramic that opens from http://fotografiaparaguay.com)

Un arroyo divide la Estancia en dos zonas bien marcadas, la primera es aquella donde están las habitaciones, comedor, quincho etc, mientras la otra es dedicada completamente al trabajo agropecuario. Este arroyo a su vez está adornado con una pequeña cascada que permite utilizarse como puente. Si hubiese querido que las hebras de agua salgan movidas y formen líneas, tendría que haber usado apertura bien cerrada, y una velocidad más baja (siempre un trípode) logrando así el famoso efecto seda.
A stream divides the country house into two well defined zones, the first is the one where the rooms, dining room, barbecue etc. are loaceted., while the other is dedicated entirely to agricultural work. This stream is adorned with a small waterfall that can be used as a bridge. If I wanted that water blur strands and form lines, I should have used open tightly closed, and a lower speed (always a tripod) and making the famous silk effect.

Una típica estampa de los arroyos paraguayos, donde se fusionan sus colores amarillos o rojizos en el fondo y los verdes y oscuros en la superficie. En esta fotografía sí utilicé una velocidad baja que me permita que el agua salga movida por su propio flujo natural y le da un aspecto más suave.
A typical image of Paraguayans streams, where they fuse their yellow or deep red and dark green color on the surface. In this picture I did used a low speed to allow me that look of the water moved by its own natural flow and gives a softer look.

Bueno, ahora abrimos bien los ojos, porque en lugares así donde tenemos naturaleza, la tenemos en centímetros cuadrados. Siempre es importante utilizar aperturas más cerradas porque ganamos definición, f4 para arriba, trípode, etc. La mayoría de las veces los bichos están quietos y posados. Debemos mirar, ejercitar la vista, encontrar detalles, muchos secretos develaremos debajo o encima de una hoja. En cámaras compactas, uno debe buscar el dibujito de "la florcita" que significa "macro". En modo macro, uno puede acercarse aún más su objetivo. Respirar tranquilo y esperar que pase el viento, sobre todo cuando los bichos están en las plantas.
Well, now we open our eyes, because in such places where we have nature, we have it in square centimeters. It is always important to use more closed apertures because we get definition, f4 or up, a tripod, etc. Most of the time the bugs are still and resting. We must see, excercise the eyes, finding details, we can find a lot of secrets above or below a leaf. In compact cameras, one should look for the drawing of "the little flower" which means "macro". In macro mode, you can even get close up your target. Breathe easy and wait until the wind stops, especially when the bugs are in plants.

Esta crisálida no podía pasar desapercibida con su hermoso color contrastando al tronco del árbol. Para este tipo de fotografías no hace falta hacer efectos ni post-procesado en Photoshop, sino que uno puede calibrar el balance de blancos y darle más predominancia cálida a la imagen. This chrysalis could not escape with its beautiful colors contrasting to the tree trunk. For this kind of photography one does not need to do post-processing effects in Photoshop, but you can calibrate the white balance and provide more predominance of warm to the image.

Ejercitar los ojos, y encontrar la belleza en sus espacios más ínfimos. Recordar también que si tu objeto no es lo suficientemente grande en el encuadre, es mejor situarlo hacia un costado y compensar el espacio sobrante con cualquier otra cosa. En este caso, el balance de blancos aportó ayuda y los colores en modo "vívido" también. El único post-procesado que uno necesita hacer es Definición (Sharpening) y recortar para un mejor encuadre.
Exercise your eyes and find beauty in the tiniest spaces. Remember too that if your object is not large enough in the frame, is better place it to one side and compensate that extra space with anything else. In this case, white balance and color provided support in "vivid"as well. The only post-processing one needs to do is Sharpening and trimmed to a better frame.

Además uno debe tener un poco de paciencia y un poco de aventura. Para esta fotografía tuve que atajarme de unas ramas y estar un poco "en el aire" sobre el arroyo, porque la mariposa se encontraba en una planta que sobresalía de un barranco. En la 4ta y 5ta tomas salió mejor que en las anteriores, porque el vaivén de las hojas por el viento lo colocaba fuera del rango mi punto de enfoque.
In addition one must have a little patience and a little sense of adventure. For this picture I had to hold myself to some branches and a be a lilttle bit "on the air" of the stream, because the butterfly was found in a plant sticking out of a ravine. In the 4th and 5th shots came out better than previous, because the leaves swaying in the wind put it out of my range of focus.

Uno tampoco debe perder la conexión que existe con la naturaleza en ese momento. Estar detrás de una cámara buscando detalles te pone más en contacto con tu alrededor, y te desconecta de los problemas y del mundo por unos instantes. Lo valioso aquí es que la naturaleza es un tren que se mueve a su propio ritmo y con sus propias reglas, y uno lo aborda cuando puede; una vez en ese tren, puede disfrutar de los paisajes que ofrece.
One should not lose the connection with nature at that time. Being behind a camera looking detail puts you more in touch with your surroundings, and you are disconnected from the problems and the world for a while. What is valuable here is that nature is a train moving at their own pace and with their own rules, and one approaches it when it can, once on that train, you can enjoy the scenery it offers.

Los paisajes con los que nos regocijamos en ese tren de la naturaleza son variados, desde elementos estáticos a elementos dinámicos. El viaje se torna placentero hasta el momento en que debemos bajar y situar los pies en la tierra, o sea, al momento de apagar la cámara y dejar de ver todo a través de un minúsculo cuadrado. Mientras tanto, vuelvo a recomendarte y disculpáme por ser reiterativo: observá cada ángulo, cada centímetro que te rodea, cada micromundo que desea ejecutar su obra teatral en tu presencia.
Landscapes in which we rejoice in that train of nature that is varied, from static items to dynamic elements. The journey becomes enjoyable until we get down and put our feet on the ground, that is, when turning off the camera and stop seeing everything through a tiny square. In the meantime, I again recommend and I apologize for being repetitive: see every angle, every inch around you, each microworld that wants to run play in your presence.

Y a veces una forma de bajarte del tren antes de tiempo, es mediante el llamado a una chipa guasú recién salida del horno. El Dr. Ávila ni tuvo que obligarnos a llegar hasta la fuente porque con un sólo aviso ya estábamos ahí. Recordá que para fotografiar mejor la comida es bueno utilizar aperturas cerradas, de manera a que la zona enfocada no es mínima, es decir, la profundidad de campo es mayor así.
And sometimes a way of getting off the train early, is through the call of a fresh chipa guasú from the oven. Dr. Avila didn't even had to force us to get to the source because with a single notice and we were there. Remember that for better shooting of food is good to use openings closed, so that the target area is not minimal, ie, depth of field is greater as well.

La majestuosidad de nuestro gigante dormido nos acompañó en lo que duró el almuerzo, donde el Dr. Ávila nos regaló una apetecible pata de chancho que la dejamos cocinarse en la parrilla al menos 3 horas. Luego del almuerzo, tuve una siestita en hamaca paraguaya observando el cerro y las nubes.
The majesty of our sleeping giant joined us as did the lunch, where Dr. Avila gave us a leg of pork desirable that we cooked on the grill at least 3 hours. After lunch, I had a nap in the hammock watching the hills and clouds.

Para las fotografías compuestas de marcados claroscuros, es importante hacer un trabajo de postprocesado en donde con un par de imágenes conseguiremos el resultado deseado. En este caso tomé 2 fotografías (con trípode siempre) en donde en una, las partes oscuras salen bien y las claras quemadas; y en la otra las partes claras salen bien y las oscuras salen subexpuestas (más oscuras aún). Luego en la computadora comienza el trabajo de usar lo mejor de cada foto para llegar a un resultado favorable.
For photos marked composed of clairness and darkness, it is important a post-processing work where with a couple of pictures we get the desired result. In this case I took 2 shots (with a tripod always) where in one of the pictures, I got the dark parts very well and whites go burnt, and the other picture with bright parts go right and dark parts go underexposed (even darker). After in the computer starts the work of using the best of each photo to reach a favorable outcome.

18:20 - Luego de una buena partida de Volley con mis compañeros, disfruté del arroyo en todo su esplendor. Sus templadas aguas permitían revitalizarme. En estas tomas aproveché como siempre la bondad del trípode y una apertura más cerrada. A tener en cuenta siempre que un lente de 18mm permite un mejor panorama de cualquier arroyo, debido a su ángulo de visión más amplio. Sin miedo, metan el trípode al arroyo y hagan buenas tomas desde el punto de vista a nivel del agua, no se arrepentirán de los resultados.
18:20 - After a good match of volleyball with my friends, I enjoyed the stream in all its glory. Its warm waters allows you to  revitalize. In these shots I took the goodness of the tripod and opening closer. Please note whenever a 18mm lens allows a better view of any stream, due to its wide viewing angle. Without fear, mess up the tripod to the stream and make good shots from the point of view of water level you will not regret the results.
Y la naturaleza nunca dejó de estar presente en cada momento que observé y recorrí con los ojos cada espacio del lugar. Es altamente recomendable hacer este tipo de viajes por el interior, a la estancia de algún amigo, conocido o algún lugar con arroyos y monte. Para esta toma, de nuevo el balance de blancos hizo el trabajo, donde lo seteé en modo sombra y da unos colores más rojizos y fuertes.
And the nature never failed to be present in every moment that I saw and explore with my eyes each area of the site. It is highly recommended to do this kind of travel, stay at a friends country house, or somewhere with rivers and mountains. For this shot, again the white balance did the work, where the mode I set it was in "shadow" and gives a more stong reddish color.

18:35 - La hora más triste de un domingo, para quien viaja al interior a desconectarse de la ciudad es efectivamente la hora de decir adiós. Sin embargo en algunos momentos del mes -cercanos a la luna llena- es irónicamente la mejor hora para tomar fotos del ascenso de la luna donde cerca del horizonte se percibe con mayor tamaño, y uno no necesita utilizar velocidades bajas para que pueda verse todo lo que hay alrededor. En estos casos, la luna se percibe bien, el cielo y los cerros o árboles: todo conspira. Y recuerden que una luna queda también mejor cerca de uno de los tercios, que en el medio de la toma.
18:35 - The saddes hour of a Sunday, for those traveling out of the city to disconnect is indeed time to say goodbye. However, in some times of the month -near the full moon- is ironically the best time to take photos of the rising of the moon where near the horizon its seen bigger in size, and you don't need to use slower speeds so you can see everything around. In these cases, the moon is perceived well, the sky and hills and trees, all conspire. And remember that a moon is also better about one-thirds that in the middle of the shot.

Termina así este viaje corto y cercano, pero absolutamente gratificante. El sonido de las cigarras acompañando constantemente, el sol que alumbraba y quemaba nuestras pieles, el agua que fluía con su ritmo indiferente, todo nos hacía sentir en un lugar semejante al nombre de la estancia. El Paraíso. La atención especial del Dr. Ávila, de Martín su hijo y mi compañero de colegio, los momentos con mis demás compañeros y algunos con sus señoras e hijos, todo hacía situarme en un fin de semana en familia. No puedo dejar de repetirles que ante la primera invitación para ir al interior, no duden y vayan. Vayan y despídanse del asfalto, de los edificios, del smog, de los ruidos y el tumulto. Paraguay tiene muchos paraísos para ofrecerte, es cuestión que no descartes ninguno de ellos. PD: a veces creo que ni hace falta recordarles que agradezco una vez más a la Srta. Kim por su incansable ayuda en la corrección del inglés.

This is how ends this short trip, close, but quite rewarding. The accompanying sound of cicadas constantly, the sun shone and burned our skin, the water flowing with indifference rate, all made us feel in a place like the name of the countryhouse. The Paradise. The especial attention of Dr. Avila, his son Martin and my schoolmate, the moments with my other classmates and some with their wives and children, all of that had put me in a family weekend. I cannot stop repeating that at the first invitation that you have to go inside the country, do not hesitate and go. Say goodbye to the asphalt, the buildings, the smog, the noise and tumult. Paraguay has a lot of Havens to offer, is up to you to not discard any of them. PS: Sometimes I think needless to remind you once again to thank Ms. Kim for their tireless help in correcting English.

XII Festival Latinoamericano de la Doma y el Folklore Tacuaty 2011

XII Latin American Festival of Rodeo and Folklore

Luego de haber dejado atrás las hermosas guaranias que siguieron cantándose después del trepidar de los tambores de Kamba Cua 2011 hasta tarde en la madrugada, me embarqué rumbo al sur con mis amigos Ariane, Flor y Omar. Como sabrán, a inicios de cada Enero desde hace doce años en la estancia Tacuaty ubicada en la ciudad de Santiago -departamento de Misiones-, se realiza el conocido "Festival Latinoamericano de la Doma y el Folklore". En la semana nos decidimos y nos fuimos ahí, utilizando la Ruta 1 que nos brindó hermosos paisajes, Es una verdadera fiesta que conjuga danza, costumbres y tradiciones para deleitar la vista, música de diversos puntos campestres del Mercosur para deleitar el oído, sin dejar de lado la gastronomía local que aporta su encanto, para deleitar al olfato y al gusto. La demostración de destreza, las usuales faenas que se realizan en el campo, bailes típicos de las regiones, música sertaneja, chamamé, polca, guaranias, asado, chorizo y otras cosas que cautivan a cualquier persona que en un efímero momento se permita intercambiarlos por el caos, la monotonía y el calor de la ciudad al que están acostumbrados. Incluso una lluvia torrencial se hizo presente, en la fiesta de esta tierra que está marcada por sus tradiciones. En este fotopost, tengo el honor de compartir imágenes de mi amigo Omar, quien luego de mucho tiempo, decidió realizar de nuevo algunos disparos con su cámara. Bien por él!

Having left behind the beautiful sung of the guaranias that followed after the trepidation of the Kamba Cua 2011 drums late into the night, I embarked southbound with my friends Ariane, Flor and Omar. As you know, at the beginning of every January since twelve years in Tacuaty, located in the city of Santiago -Department of Misiones- they made the famous "Latin American Festival of Rodeo and Folklore". In the week we decided and to went there, using the Route 1 that gave us beautiful landscapes It is a feast that combines dance, customs and traditions to please the eye, music from different parts of the Mercosur countryside to delight the ear, without forgetting the local cuisine provided by its charm, to delight the nose and taste. The demonstration of skill, the usual tasks that are performed in the field, region dances, country music, chamamé, polka guaranias, roast meat, sausage and other things that allow to anyone who's in a fleeting moment can exchange it for the chaos, the monotony and heat of the city to which they are accustomed. Even a big rain was present at the feast of this land that is marked by its traditions. In this fotopost, I have the honor of sharing images of my friend Omar, who after a long time, decided to hold back some shots with his camera. Good for him!

10:18 - Después de un placentero viaje por una ruta que alardeaba de su excelente estado, llegamos a San Ignacio Misiones y de ahí continuamos a la ciudad de Santiago hasta la Estancia Tacuaty, donde apreciamos estos hermosos especímenes equinos.
10:18 - After a easy trip along a route that boasted of its excellent condition, we arrived at San Ignacio Misiones and then continue to the city of Santiago to Tacuaty's Farm, where we appreciate these beautiful horses specimens.

Mitad de mañana y se sentía un calor agobiante, pero el público supo acompañar con alegría y aplausos desde las graderías que estaban cubiertas con telas de media sombra.
Mid-morning and we felt the heat very oppressive, but the public knew how to accompanied with joy and applause from the stands that were covered with semi-shade fabrics.

Mientras las nubes se ponían grises y se sentían vientos de cambio, anunciando de forma aún muy temprana la cercanía de la lluvia.
