Aproximadamente a las 04:40 AM de hoy 29 de Setiembre, estaba eligiendo las fotografías del Concierto de Alejandro Lerner y Armando Manzanero, Asunción A 2 Pianos y percibo un olor a humo en mi departamento. Hago los controles habituales por si era aquí el problema hasta que salgo al balcón y ahí era más fuerte. El fuego se había iniciado a escasos 40mts de mi ubicación, por lo que agarro mi cámara y salgo a buscar una aventura, como aquella vez en 2009 cuando fotografié la labor de nuestros ángeles bomberos que velan por nosotros durante nuestro sueño, bueno, el sueño de quienes duermen a esa hora, yo generalmente no. La Gráfica Asuncena sufrió en un depósito sin uso -pero con elementos combustibles-, la violencia y vorágine del fuego, que fue sofocado una vez más por estos guardianes ad honorem de la ciudad, y felizmente sin víctimas que lamentar. Finalmente me dormí a las 08:00 AM, y fui despertado a las 11 para continuar junto a unas personas con un trabajo que estaba haciendo, así que se me pasó todo el día antes que pueda compartirles estas imágenes. Vení, seguíme... pero recomiendo que te pongas un trapo mojado en la cara.

Approximately at 04:40 AM today, September 29, I was choosing the pictures of the concert by Alejandro Lerner and Armando Manzanero, Asunción to 2 Pianos and I smell smoke in my apartment. I do the routine checks in the way to determinate if the problem was here until I go to the balcony and there the smell was stronger. The fire had started a few 40 meters from my location, so I grab my camera and I'm looking for an adventure, like the time in 2009 when I photographed the work of our angels firefighters who watch over us during our sleep, well, the sleep of those sleeping at that hour, I usually do not. Gráfica Asuncena (a Print business) suffered in an unused warehouse -but with fuel elements- the vortex of violence and fire, which was put down again by these ad honorem guardians of the city, and fortunately no casualties were reported. Finally I fell asleep at 08:00 am and I was woken up at 11 to continue with some people with a job I was doing, so I spent the whole day working before I share these images with you. Come, follow me ... but I recommend that you put a wet rag in your face.

Uno de los empleados que duermen en la gráfica realiza llamadas para informar lo sucedido, y luego me impide el paso. #651 Yegros street, location of the fire. Mi amigo, el oficial Santiago Vázquez (centro) conversa con su colega, para decidir si por el techo es la mejor manera de atacar el foco que se encuentra en el fondo. A su izquierda, un vecino de la calle Herrera informa que tienen que ir a ver lo que se ve desde su patio.

Efectivamente desde el patio del señor se tenía el mejor panorama para atacar el fuego. El calor es abrasador y el humo que genera, es altamente tóxico.

Bomberos azules, o de Asunción, llegan a la oscura casa del señor, y realizan sus maniobras rutinarias de despliegue de la manguera, para conectarlos y utilizarlos contra el fuego. Siluetas en el humo: el agua comienza a hacer efecto y una pequeña parte del incendio se apaga pero genera un humo tóxico aún peor que el emanado por el fuego.

La casa del vecino de Herrera felizmente fue el mejor lugar desde el que podían trabajar los bomberos para apagar el incendio. A tempranas horas de este feriado, el señor abrió sus puertas a los bomberos, mientras uno de sus hijos había intentado hasta donde pudo -agobiado por el humo tóxico-, apagar el fuego con baldes de agua. Neighbor's house in Herrera street happily was the best place from which firefighters were working to extinguish the fire. In the early hours of this holiday, the Mr. opened its doors to the firemen, while one of his sons had tried everything he could -overwhelmed by the toxic smoke- extinguish the fire with buckets of water.

Un bombero intenta aplacar el fuego desde el patio del vecino, trabajo que se torna difícil e imposible porque no se está atacando directamente el foco del incendio. A firefighter tries to extinguish the fire from a neighbor's yard, the work becomes difficult or impossible because he is not attacking directly the source of fire.

Los bomberos traen una escalera con la que alcanzarán la zona más alta de la muralla y así poder atacar el fuego en forma directa.

Desde un tinglado del vecino puedo observar la magnitud del incendio y la labor de los bomberos a 5 metros de distancia. Grandes ráfagas de viento caliente y humo negro me impiden respirar y mirar la situación, que imagino será más insostenible para quien está al frente. Luego me comentan que debajo del traje no se siente el calor y con los equipos de aire comprimido no hay peligro de inhalación de humo. Five meters away, from a neighbor's warehouse roof I can see the extent of the fire and firefighters working. Great gusts of hot wind and black smoke prevent me for breathing and watch the situation, which I imagine will be unbearable for the person on the front. Desde la parte alta del tinglado a tan sólo 3 metros, tengo la mejor vista del suceso, pero pagando el alto precio de aspirar el peor de los humos que irrita mis ojos, garganta, fosas nasales. Aguanto la respiración unos 8 segundos y cierro los ojos, al abrirlos el panorama no cambió. Mantengo mi posición un par de minutos más, y se sienten latigazos del calor que emana el lugar, siempre con el maldito humo que sólo me recuerda a bucear sin equipo.
From the top of the warehouse but just 3 meters, I have the best view of the event, but paying the high price of sucking the worst of the fumes, irritating my eyes, throat, nostrils. I hold my breath for about 8 seconds and close my eyes, when I opened, the outlook has not changed. I maintain my position a couple of minutes, and feel whips of heat emanating from the place, always with the goddamn smoke that reminds me just like diving without equipment.



Un segundo grupo de bomberos se prepara para entrar en acción, en forma a relevar a los que se encuentran trabajando. Como había comentado alguna vez en "Incendios del centro, en dos tomas 2009", es importante tener grupos que suplanten los turnos.
A second group of firefighters are prepared for action, as to relieve those who are working. As was mentioned once in "Fire from downtown, in two takes 2009", it is important to have groups to replace shifts.



Bomberos recién llegados al lugar, conectan la mangueras para ingresar a la residencia y complementar los trabajos de quienes están dentro.
Firemen that just arrive to the site, connect the hoses to enter in the residence and complement the work of those which are working inside.



Camaradas del bombero que tuvo mayor parte del trabajo al frente del fuego observan la situación. El aire todavía es respirable, pero aún quedan focos de incendio que seguir apagando.
Comrades of the firefighter who took most of the work in front of the fire monitoring the situation. The air is like breathable, but there are still pockets of fire to keep off.



El sol despliega sus rojizos colores a lo lejos, mientras el fuego por momentos crecía y se reducía con esas aguas calmadoras.
The sun spreads its reddish color in the distance, while the fire grew and is now reduced to those needed waters.



El bombero que más tiempo había estado frente al fuego terminó su turno y ahora se hidrataba con agua fría.

El rostro del oficial tercero Eduardo refleja las consecuencias del contacto cercano con el humo sin máscaras, protegiéndose sólo cerrando un poco los ojos. Un rostro cuyos ojos se parecían a los míos en este momento, por no dormir y por el humo.

05:45 - La diferencia del caso anterior se observa aquí, con este bombero que se estaba quitando los equipos que recién utilizó. Los ojos permanecen impecables, por la seguridad que ofrece la máscara. Finalmente el fuego fue contenido.

Ellos son los novatos que en Octubre de 2010 serán nombrados como bomberos, y ahora preparando los equipos que ya se utilizaron para separarlos de los no utilizados, de manera a que si surge una emergencia están listos, este operativo se hace en simultáneo, porque no debería haber tiempo que perder.
They are the rookies that in October 2010 will become firemen, they are now preparing equipment already used to separate them of the unused, so that if an emergency arises they are ready. This operation is done simultaneously, because should have no time to waste.



Santiago me explicaba sobre los hidrantes de agua de las calles que abastecen el camión cuyo tanque tiene una capacidad de 2000lts, que a su vez ejerce la presión para que el agua salga violentamente despedida a través de la manguera.

Desde la casa de al lado que es la que pertenecía a mi tía abuela, y ahora a un tío mío, puedo hacer estas tomas de los bomberos trabajando en los restos, removiendo escombros, buscando posibles materiales que puedan encenderse nuevamente.
From the house next door is the one belonged to my great aunt and now of an uncle of mine, I can make these shots of the firefighters working on the remains, removing debris, looking for possible materials that could ignite the fire again.



Uno de los bomberos trabaja en los restos y escombros del viejo depósito convertido en cenizas, visto desde el extractor de aire que comunicaba al patio contiguo.
One of the firefighters working on the remains and debris from the old warehouse turned into ashes, as seen from the air pump connected to the adjacent backyard.



Una de las maderas que sostenía el techo de ese viejo depósito nos muestra en su piel el deterioro producido por ese incensante fuego, que aún así no logró doblegarlo.
One of the timbers supporting the roof of this old warehouse show in their skin the damage caused by the incessant fire, which still did not break him.



El camión de bomberos proseguía con su monótono ejercicio de bombear agua, agua -no potable- que se perdía, o bien como dictan las leyes de la física e incluso Drexler: se transformaba.
The fire truck went on with its monotonous exercise of pumping water, water -not drinkable- that was lost, or as dictated by the laws of physics and even Drexler, was transformed.

Así culminó esta aventura sin víctimas que lamentar. Al terminar de escribir estas líneas en el word, recibo un mensaje de mi tío que ya había visto el noticiero en donde yo aparecí en una de las escenas del incendio mientras estaba tomando fotos, y en el mensaje me contaba que la casa donde funciona la Gráfica Asuncena era de mi abuelo y la vendió hace muchos años. Con razón el diseño de la misma es un espejo de la casa de mi tía abuela desde donde había tomado algunas de las últimas fotografías. Me puse a pensar en las vueltas que da la vida, porque de no haberla vendido yo podría haber estado en este mismo lugar, pero quizás en una situación totalmente diferente. Thus ended this adventure without casualties were reported. After writing these lines in MS Word, I get a message from my uncle who had seen the news where I appeared in one scene of the fire while I was taking photos, and in the message he tell me that the house where works the Gráfica Asuncena, was of my grandfather and he sold it many years ago. That's why the design itself was a mirror of my great aunt's house where I had taken some of the latest photos in this post. Asuncion a dos pianos, cuatro manos y cinco mil corazones

Asuncion to two pianos, four hands and five thousands hearts

La noche del 28 de Setiembre de 2010 fue inolvidable, mágica. La Secretaría de Cultura de la Municipalidad de Asunción organizó un evento que podríamos decir, "sin precedentes", gratis y accesible para todos los paraguayos que pudieron acercarse hasta la Plaza de la Democracia. Y mirá vos que sí, porque se acercaron más de cinco mil almas a disfrutar de un concierto de la mano (literalmente) de dos grandes artistas de la música romántica: Armando Manzanero y Alejandro Lerner. Dos generaciones pero unidos por un mismo sentimiento, la música. Me imagino del orgullo que sentirán los organizadores de este evento, con Fernando Pistilli a la cabeza (Director de Cultura de la Municipalidad) y con el visto bueno de la Sra. Evanhy de Gallegos, quien anteriormente ya me compró con su "Sanjuanazo 2010", organizado en el mismo predio. Vamos a recordar esta noche que promete, y aprovecho para saludar a todos los amigos fotógrafos que hoy es su día, mío no, porque yo soy sólo un contador de historias.

The night of September 28th of 2010 was unforgettable, magical. The Secretary of Culture of the Municipality of Asunción organized an event that I might say, "unprecedented", free and accessible to all Paraguayans who could come to the Plaza de la Democracia. And look you so, because it came more than five thousand souls to enjoy a concert by the hand (literally) of two great artists of the romantic music: Armando Manzanero and Alejandro Lerner. Two generations but united by a common feeling, the music. I imagine the pride they feel the organizers of this event, with Fernando Pistilli to the head (Director of Culture of the Municipality) and with the approval of Ms. Evanhy de Gallegos (the Mayor), who previously and bought me with his "Sanjuanazo 2010" organized in the same place. We will remember this night that promises, and I take this opportunity to greet everyone photographer friends that today is your day, not mine, because I'm just a storyteller.

Subo al escenario y puedo apreciar de cerca los pianos con los que esa noche interpretaron memorables canciones estos dos grandes artistas. El Banco Nacional de Fomento es reflejado sobre la lustrada y pulcra tapa del piano de Lerner, mientras que el Hotel Guaraní Splendor en el de Manzanero.
I get in the stage and I can appreciate closier the piano which that night performed memorable songs by these two great artists. The Banco Nacional de Fomento is reflected on the polished and sleek piano cover of Lerner, while the Hotel Guarani Splendor in the Manzanero.

16:49 - Fernando Pistilli observa el montaje de las cámaras que tomarán las manos de los artistas para ser proyectados en la pantalla gigante del escenario y las pantallas laterales. Impecable labor de este señor que controló todo el procedimiento y fue uno de los primeros en llegar y recibir a la gente en el evento.

Se colocan las primeras vallas de seguridad que separarán el sector de las autoridades e invitados. La distancia de la primera fila de sillas luego será ubicada en el punto ideal para que la gente pueda apreciar mejor el escenario.
Place the first security fence separated the field for the authorities and guests. The distance from the first row of seats will then be located in the ideal spot for people to see better the stage.

A cuatro metros de altura, uno de los encargados apunta el proyector hacia la pantalla gigante. Se cuidan todos los detalles para ofrecer un show especial y con mucho profesionalismo. At four feets, one of the managers point the projector to the big screen. They take care of every detail to offer a special show with professionalism.

17:06 - Uno de los sonidistas de esta gira "Manzanero-Lerner" efectúa más pruebas del audio, en un par de horas, comienza el show.

Dos hombres conversaban en las graderías, y pienso que reflejan el sentimiento del show que unirá a dos generaciones distintas, que disfrutó de la música de estos dos artistas en su tiempo.
Two men talking in the stands, and I think they reflect the feeling of the show that will bring together two different generations, who enjoyed the music of these two artists in their time.

En lo alto de la estructura del escenario, uno de los encargados se toma un descanso, luego de controlar las conexiones de las luces. At the top of the structure of the stage, one of the men in charge take a break, after controlling lights connections.

17:10 - Comienza a llegar la gente y ubicarse. El show comenzará aproximadamente en dos horas, pero como es gratuito y el clima está favorable se espera una gran concurrencia. Es importante llegar primero y tener un buen lugar.

17:12 - 29ºC de calor no se sienten agradables en el ambiente, por eso la mejor manera de combatirlos era con tereré. La temperatura finalmente descendería a 23ºC para la hora del evento.

17:15 - Tres chicas fanáticas de Lerner conversan en lo alto de la gradería. La mejor manera de esperar esas dos horas y media antes del show, es pasarla bien compartiendo y comentando con las amistades, así cualquier tiempo parece corto. 17:15 - Three girls fans of Lerner talk at the top of the grandstand. The best way to wait the two hours before the show, is to have fun sharing and talking with friends, so any time seems short.

Las sillas son los mudos espectadores en este momento, aguardando que la gente llegue y se ubique para disfrutar del show. Los mejores lugares son para los pacientes que llegan antes.
The chairs are the mute spectators at this time, waiting for people to come and be located to enjoy the show. The best places are for patient who arriving earlier.



17:30 - Como estaba previsto por la Municipalidad, el acceso a la calle Independencia Nacional a la altura de Oliva/Cerro Corá se cierra y el tránsito será desviado y ordenado por la policía de tránsito. Yo me retiro a mi departamento para aguardar el show y volver más tarde.
17:30 - As planned by the city, access to Independencia Nacional and Olive/Cerro Cora streets is closed and traffic will be diverted and directed by the traffic police. I go to my apartment to await the show and come back later.



19:30 - Desde el undécimo piso del edificio donde resido, se disfruta de la vista -no así de los 23ºC y el viento-, en donde puedo apreciar el Palacio de López, el Palacio Alegre, el Panteón de los Héroes y el escenario en donde el grupo Quintaesencia comienza su show. Hora de volver.
19:30 - From the eleventh floor of the building where I live, I enjoy the view -but not the 23°C and the wind-, where I can see the Palacio de López, Palacio Alegre, the Panteon de los Heroes and the stage, where the group Quitaesencia begins his show. It's time to come back.




Lastimosamente no llegué para ver el show de Quintaesencia, terminaron antes que pueda encontrar una buena ubicación, (mil disculpas, la próxima no fallo); no obstante toda esta gente aplaudió y elogió la presentación del quinteto femenino, y en minutos comenzaba el show.
Unfortunately I did not get to see the show of Quintaesencia, they finish before I can find a good location (thousand apologyzes, the next I wouldn't fail), yet all these people cheered and applauded the presentation of female quintet, and in minutes the show began.



No me dejaban acceder al sector de "prensa" (y lo pongo entre comillas porque encontré ahí menos personas de prensa), así que me perdí la primera presentación de Manzanero. Evanhy me dijo "entrá nomás" pero le perdí el rastro y se me escapó, y Fernando Pistilli estaba como loco y tampoco pudo prestarme mucha atención, pero agradezco a su secretario que me concedió el privilegio, y pude llegar cuando Lerner comienza su parte del show.
I was not allowed access to the sector of "press" (and I put it in quotes because I found people there less press), so I missed the first presentation of Manzanero. Evanhy said to me "just come!" but I lost track and she escaped, and Fernando Pistilli was crazy and could not lend much attention, but I appreciate his secretary gave me the privilege, and I come when Lerner begins his part of show.



Lerner interpretaba de lo mejor de su repertorio, creo que comenzó con "No hace falta".
Lerner played the best of his repertoire, I think it started with "No hace falta".



La gente acompañaba las músicas de Lerner, era gratificante escuchar ese gigantesco grupo humano que se unía en canto y dejaban los problemas y el estrés atrás.
People accompanying the music of Lerner, it was gratifying to hear that giant group of people who joined in singing and let the problems and stress behind.



El piano de Lerner arrancaba las más hermosas melodías, aquellas que traen recuerdos de años anteriores, de mi adolescencia, de aquellos años cuando todavía se bailaban los lentos, de aquellas canciones que enamoraron matrimonios y curaron corazones rotos.
Lerner's piano out the most beautiful melodies, those that bring back memories of previous years of my adolescence, those years when it was still slow danced, those songs that fell in love marriages and healed broken hearts.



Y para qué hablar de bailar lentos, de curar corazones o enamorar matrimonios si no vamos a mencionar a uno de los artífices de las más hermosas baladas y boleros latinos. Qué momento donde entre estos dos intérpretes jugaban entre ellos, cantando cada uno la música del otro, haciéndose segundas voces, y las cuerdas de los pianos que vibraban como los cinco mil corazones.
Let's cut off to talk about the slow dance, the hearts healing or love marriages if we do not mention one of the architects of the most beautiful Latin ballads and boleros. What a moment where these two players played between them, singing each other's music, making vocals and the piano strings vibrating as five thousand hearts.

Carisma es lo que menos le faltó a Manzanero, aquí en una especie de agradecimiento a Lerner lo saluda e invita a que el público lo aplauda.

Un potpurri de boleros de Manzanero interpretados por ambos con el suave y dulce sonido del piano, arrancaban del público -sobre todo femenino- mucha emoción y recuerdos de aquellas noches asuncenas donde las peñas tenían cabida en las sedes sociales y donde la juventud tenía otras maneras de divertirse. No obstante los más jóvenes conocieron fueron "reinsertados" -por así decirlo- en el mundo del bolero con las interpretaciones de Luis Miguel años atrás. Pero esta noche, ahí a escasos metros teníamos al padre de más de 400 de estas letras y armonías maravillosas, que conquistaron a más de una. "Somos novios", "No sé tu", "Contigo aprendí", entre otras.
A potpourri of Manzanero's boleros performed by both the soft and sweet piano sound, tearing of the public -especially women- a lot of emotion and memories of those nights Asuncion where the peñas have place in social clubs and where young people had other ways of fun. However the younger knew were "reinserted" -so to speak- in the world of bolero with interpretations of Luis Miguel years ago. Un par de manos se levantan entre la multitud, acompañando en un lento vaivén las canciones y dejándose llevar por una noche agradable y estrellada con este fondo musical único.

Una hora de show y ante la primera pausa la gente pedía "otra", y Lerner contesta "no se apuren, esto recién empieza", logrando así el aplauso y el grito de alegría de la gente, mientras estos dos artistas que dejan todo en el escenario cumplen el precepto de "el corazón es grande, pero la plaza es chica"... y sí, faltó lugar.
One hour of show and at the first break people asking for "other" and Lerner replied "Do not worry, this is just the beginning", thus the applause and screams of joy from the people, while these two artists who leave everything in stage satisfy the precept of "the heart is great, but the place is small" ... and yes, there was no room for more people in the place.




Por momentos, entre estos dos grandes hacían el juego del protagonismo, en donde Manzanero quedaba sólo en el escenario e interpretaba algunas de sus canciones para luego comenzar con una de Lerner y éste aparecía en el escenario y viceversa. Qué dupla!.

Llego al último piso del edificio y escucho que, luego de haber interpretado hermosas baladas y pop romántico, le toca el turno a la música más hermosa del planeta: la guarania, y qué mejor representante para este género que "Recuerdos de Ypacarai". Volví a este lugar privilegiado porque me gustaba la composición que muestra esos grandes palacios del microcentro, junto con las últimas luces del show que ya terminaba, y cometí el error de bajarme a mi departamento para descargar las fotos. En ese momento se realizaba una condecoración a ambos artistas, por parte del Municipio Capitalino.
I get to the top floor and I hear that, after having played beautiful ballads and romantic pop, it is the turn to the most beautiful music on the planet: the guarania, and what better representative for this genre than "Recuerdos de Ypacarai ". I went back to this special place because I liked the composition showing these great palaces of downtown, along with the last light of the show already ended, and I made the mistake of getting down to my apartment to download the photos. 22:05 - Y decía yo que cometí el error de bajarme, porque 10 minutos después comenzó un show de fuegos artificiales hermosos e hipnotizantes, y me perdí de aquel lugar privilegiado donde se verían mejor. Sin embargo estas fotos las pude hacer desde mi balcón posterior.

¿Qué más podría agregar?... creo que nada. Lo bueno de este trabajo no remunerado es que te permite disfrutar a la par de realizar tu hobbie. Espero que la Municipalidad organice más eventos de este tipo, y aún más que lo hagan las Gobernaciones de las ciudades del interior, porque todos los paraguayos se lo merecen, puesto que estamos en plena carrera hacia el Bicentenario. Una sola sugerencia/recomendación: en otras capitales del mundo, cuando el gobierno de la ciudad realiza este tipo de eventos, el servicio de colectivos extiende su horario, de manera a seguir funcionando con fluidez. Las autoridades sí se preocupan en "revivir" el centro, pero las 22:15hs es aún muy temprano que muera de nuevo, deberían permitir por medio de estos dos puntos importantes: la seguridad y el transporte público, que uno no se pierda la oportunidad de pasear por las plazas o comer algo en los bares y restaurantes tan lindos que tenemos en el centro y que podrían estar abarrotados de gente y qué decir turistas, si esos dos puntos se atacan. Volviendo al concierto, queremos más de esta clase, shows con altura que puedan congregar gente de varias generaciones para que juntos compartamos una noche especial, de las más de 360 que tenemos en el año. Mientras así sea, prometo seguir contando estas vivencias y compartiendo con ustedes a través de las fotografías, porque "No sé tú" pero este blog lo hago "Todo a pulmón".

What more could I add? ... I think nothing. The good thing about this unpaid work is that you can enjoy it when making your hobby. I hope that the City organize more events of this kind, and even more than they do in the inner cities, because all Paraguayans deserve it, since we are in the race to the Bicentennial. One suggestion/advice: in other world capitals, where the city government does this kind of events, they extended the bus service schedule, so to continue running. The authorities do care to "revive" the downtown, but at 22:15 pm is still too early to die again, should be allowed through these two important issues: security and public transport, you do not miss strolling through the streets or something to eat at bars and restaurants so cute that we have in the center and could be crowded, and tourists what to say, if those two points are attacked. Returning to the concert, we want more of this kind, shows with height that can bring together people of different generations to share a special evening together, among the over of 360 we have in the year. While so, I promise to continue to have these experiences and sharing with you through photographs, because "I don't know, do you?"
