A little bit of a river, Chaco and Leprechauns

He recibido reclamos de que finaliza el tercer mes de 2010 y hasta ahora no he publicado más que entradas con fotografías que tomé en 2008 y 2009. [Menos mal que no publiqué las de la década del 90 hasta mediados de los dosmiles que ya tendrán su lugar en el futuro :)...] Además ya me reclamaron por las fotos de Mendoza, del Dakar, la ruta del vino, Valparaíso, Viña, Reñaca y Santiago de Chile, de enero de este año. Por tanto, en esta entrada aún no iré fuera del país, pero sí publicaré fotos de 2010, aunque deba dedicar una parte a un destino anterior como lo fue Chaco'i. Pero la diferencia en este caso es que el viaje a Chaco'i fue a bordo del famoso "Tuku-tuku" (el pequeño bote que vimos aquí) y no en vehículo. Me acompañó como suele ser habitual, Claudio. Pero también estuvieron otras amistades de la fotografía como John (de quien hablaré en otro POST más adelante), Tam y Nathu (a quienes conocí ese día). Lo más lindo fue que... no, mejor dejo que la historia transcurra con su curso, síganla Uds:

I have received complaints that ended the third month of 2010 and so far I have not posted more than entries with pictures I took in 2008 and 2009. [Good thing I did not publish those of the 90s to the mid-two thousand who already have their place in the future :)...] Also claimed by me and photos of Mendoza, the Dakar, the wine route, Valparaiso, Viña, Reñaca and Santiago de Chile, in January this year. Therefore, this entry does not go outside the country, but will post photos of 2010, but must devote part of a previous post as it was Chaco'i. But the difference here is that the journey to Chaco'i was aboard the famous "Tuku-tuku" (a small boat that you may saw here ) and not in a vehicle. He accompanied me as usual, Claudio. But there were also other friends of photography as John (who I will speak later in another POST), Tam and Nathu (whom I met that day.) The most beautiful was ... no, better let the story takes its course, you follow it:

16:24 - Marzo 2010, comenzaría nuestro viaje desde la Playa Montevideo (en el lado Este del Puerto de Asunción), y fui caminando por Paraguayo Independiente, pasando frente al hermoso Palacio de López. Ya en la Playa Montevideo, Claudio aprovechó para comprar un helado que ante una tarde de las últimas del verano caluroso, era más que bienvenido.
16:24 - March 2010, begin our journey from Playa Montevideo (Montevideo Beach, on the east side of the port of Asunción), and I walked by Paraguayo Independiente avenue, passing in front of the beautiful Palacio de López. Already in the Playa Montevideo, Claudio took the opportunity to buy an ice cream in one of lasts afternoon of a hot summer, it was more than welcome.



16:27 - Desde el muelle de embarque de la Playa Montevideo, puedo divisar los barcos retenidos por la policía naval, a causa de alguna infracción cometida por cada uno de ellos. Y de cierta forma puedo imaginarme lo hermoso que sería nuestro puerto si hubiesen más barquitos y lanchitas de ese estilo, dándole un aire vivo y pintoresco al mismo, de manera a convertirse en un punto clave de visita turística ineludible que la imagino así:

"Los barquitos tuku-tuku del Puerto de Asunción, decenas de ellos apostados con sus colores llamativos y sus nombres en guaraní, permiten a los viajeros dar un paseo frente a cualquiera de las costas de las ciudades ribereñas, como Chaco´i, Itá Enramada o incluso llegar hasta el Puente Remanso, que une las dos regiones del país. Los viajes son guiados, con precios que rondan entre 5 a 10 U$ y tienen una duración aproximada de 2 o 3h en donde podrá disfrutar de la tranquilidad del Río Paraguay, divisar ciertas aves y conocer de cerca el trabajo de los pescadores. Es sin dudas un paseo que no debe perderse si visita la capital Paraguaya".

Evidentemente el potencial no explotado para el Turismo que tenemos hasta en las cosas más simples es abismal.

16:27 - From the pier of the Montevideo beach, I can actually see the ships detained by the naval police, because of an infringement committed by each one of them. And in a way I can imagine how beautiful it would be our port if there were more boats and small boat like that, giving it a lively and colorful at the same, so as to become a key point of tourist visit as well I can imagine like that:

"The Port of Asuncion tuku-tuku boats, dozens of them posted with their bright colors and their names in Guarani, allow travelers to trip front of any of the cities along the coast, as Chaco'i, Ita Enramada or even get to the bridge "Puente Remanso", which link the two regions of the country. The trips are guided, with prices hovering around 5 to 10 U$ and last approximately 2 or 3 hours where you can enjoy the tranquility of the Paraguay River, spotted some birds and learn about the work of fishermen. It is without doubt a ride that shouldn't be missed when visiting the Paraguayan capital".

Clearly the untapped potential for tourism that we have even in the simplest things is huge.



16:36 - Ya nos encontramos a bordo del "Tuku-Tuku" de Don Brígido, quien tranquilamente nos transporta rumbo a Chaco'i. Mientras tanto y como me había ocurrido en un POST anterior, el cielo volvió a hacer de las suyas y una lluvia se avecinaba dispuesta a encontrarse con nosotros en el medio del río. Pero en estos momentos, lo apacible del viaje y el constante "tuku-tuku-tuku" del motor tan sólo invitaban a perder los pensamientos.
16:36 - We are already on board the "Tuku-Tuku" owned by Don Brigido, who quietly takes us towards Chaco'i. Meanwhile, and as I had in a previous post, the sky turned to making their own, a rain was coming and prepared to meet us in the middle of river. But right now, so gentle travel and constant sound of "tuku-tuku-tuku" of the engine, invite me only to lose my thoughts.



16:39 - Pero a diferencia de aquella vez que tuvimos lluvia en el río, ésta sólo sería una lluvia de verano, indecisa, sin la compañía del rugido de los vientos, pero sí con algo más hermoso que quise adelantar al principio de este POST. Cae pesadamente y sólo escuchamos un bramido rápido en el río, el choque del agua contra el agua desde nuestro inusual punto de vista, para luego disiparse por minutos con la misma velocidad con que comenzó.
16:39 - But unlike that time we had rain in the river, it would only be a summer rain, indecisive, unaccompanied by the roar of the winds, but with something more beautiful that I advanced at the beginning of this POST. 16:46 - De nuevo la lluvia intentaba arremeter, desprendiéndose apenas de unas gotas que en conjunto con los potentes rayos solares, cubrían la superficie del agua con brillantes e inquietas gemas. Un espectáculo completo que deleitaba al mismo tiempo a los sentidos de la visión y el auditivo.
16:46 - The rain again tried to attack, shedding just a few drops which together with the strong sunlight, covered the water surface with bright, restless gems. A full show at the same time delighting the senses of sight and hearing.



16:47 - Diez minutos más de viaje y permito dejarme seducir por el paisaje ribereño, mientras la lluvia se veía que avanzaba hacia nosotros pero aún estaba lejos. Detrás del Club Mbigua, este viejo árbol, solitario, olvidado y que hoy no ofrece sombra más que para sí mismo.
16:47 - Ten minutes later of travel and I let myself being seduced by the coastal landscape, while the rain was coming towards us but was still far away. Behind the Mbigua Club, this old tree, lonely, forgotten and now not only provides shade for himself.



16:48 - Entre los hierros de esos barcos que guardaban en su piel el calor de una mañana de verano, llegó la refrescante lluvia, aplacando esa temperatura que les apoderaba por el hastío de su inmutada situación. Aquellos bancos anclados tomaron un respiro, mientras nosotros un suspiro.
16:48 - Between the bars of these vessels which in their skin kept the heat of a summer morning, came the refreshing rain, quenching the temperature were seized by the boredom of its unchanging situation. Those anchored vessels took a breather while we sigh.



16:49 - Llegó el momento de algo que había presenciado por primera vez en mi vida. La lucha de las fuerzas de la naturaleza con las de la física, esa caminata gradual de la lluvia hasta llegar a nosotros como ascendiendo los peldaños de una escalera horizontal, dejaba ver cada paso que tomaba el fenómeno natural, rumbo a nuestra dirección como recíprocamente nosotros a la suya. No, este momento no podía guardármelo sólo para mí, porque Ustedes me impulsan a compartirlo en cada post, en cada comentario.
16:49 - It's time for something I had witnessed for the first time in my life. 16:53 - Amainando o quizás alejándose, la lluvia que pasó sobre nosotros, en su estela de líquido y vapor nos deja de regalo una imagen para guardarnos el momento en absoluto silencio y admiración: un arcoiris doble que grácilmente nos saludaba y permitía enamorarnos de su portarretratos que era el cielo.

Nunca antes lo había visto por completo desde el horizonte, sin edificios que molesten. Como ya lo dije alguna vez en mi post "Desde el Río Paraguay", agradezco la situación y al Universo, que de alguna forma me puso en este momento y en este lugar, junto con mi equipo, de los contrario hubiese sido una imagen que la tendría en mi corazón.

16:57 - Nunca vi dónde nace el arcoiris, y esta vez tuve la oportunidad de ver aquella ciudad perdida donde ocurre. Aquel lugar donde los Leprechauns guardan celosamente sus tesoros. Esta imagen que para mí vale más que una olla con monedas. Gracias naturaleza.
16:57 - I never saw whence comes the rainbow, and this time I had the opportunity to see this lost city where it happens. The place where Leprechauns jealously guard their treasures. This image, which for me is better than a pot of coins. Thanks nature.



16:59 - Nos aproximábamos a nuestra parada, en las puertas de la ciudad de Chaco'i. La magia de este viaje no se compara a mi visita anterior que la hice por tierra, pero la magia del lugar siempre permanece impretérita, como la vieja escuela naval que hoy en día sólo se conforma con seguir en pie, aguardando su restauración o en el más triste de los casos, su derrumbe.
16:59 - We were approaching to our stop at the gates of the city of Chaco'i. The magic of this trip is nothing compared to my previous visit I made on land, but the magic of the place always remains timeless, as the old navy academy that today only conforms to go ahead, awaiting restoration or in saddest cases, the collapse.



17:00 - Pero antes de poner pie en tierra, me dejo seducir una vez más por el prisma de colores y perturbando de nuevo el secreto de los gnomos, la ocasión en que este árbol hermitaño se alineaba con el fenómeno no sería otra oportunidad desaprovechada por mi lente, como las muchas que tuve en mi vida sin una cámara conmigo.

Nuestro "tuku-tuku" se aproximaba a la rampa de acceso para desembarcar en Chaco´i. En esta imagen, Carlos Ramón Aquino (antigüo lanchero del Club Mbigua que he conocido más de la mitad de mi vida) hace palanca con una tacuara para acercar su "Kabure'i" a la costa. Quizás recuerden su pericia, atravesando la neblina en un post anterior mío "Días de neblina en Asunción 2009". Our "tuku-tuku" approached the ramp to land in Chaco'i. In this image, Carlos Ramon Aquino (Oldest boatman of Club Mbigua I've met more than half my life) prying with a bamboo pole to bring his "Kabure'i" to the coast. You might remember their expertise, through the fog in my previous post "Days of fog in Asunción 2009."

Carlos se dispone a desatar la cortina de plástico con que se cubren los "tuku-tuku" cuando hay lluvia en medio del río, de forma a no mojar a los pasajeros.
Carlos is preparing to unleash the plastic curtain that cover the "tuku-tuku" when there is rain in the river, so as to not to get to passengers.

Estamos aquí de nuevo, frente al viejo oratorio y hoy capilla, que se sitúa al lado de la casa de Claudio. Haríamos un recorrido con dirección noreste guiados por Claudio, en un camino paralelo a un riachuelo que desemboca en el Río Paraguay. We are here again in front of the old chapel, which is situated next to the house of Claudio. We would make a journey guided by Claudio northeast in a path parallel to a creek that flows into the Rio Paraguay.

La vida aquí es tranquila, hermosa, las casas poseen suficiente patio y el estacionamiento es la costa del río. Los pescadores de esta zona todas las mañanas parten rumbo a los remansos, a buscar sus redes y las presas de pescados capturados. Cada bote alberga en sus maderas el paso del tiempo y el recuerdo de las experiencias pasadas. El bote al igual que otro transporte, demarca su camino recorrido en la estela que deja sobre el río. Life here is peaceful, beautiful, the houses have enough backyard and the garage is the riverbank. Fishermen in the area every morning start due to the backwaters, to seek their nets and capture fish prey. Each boat has in its wood the marks of the time and the memory of past experiences. The boat as well as other transportation, demarcates its path in the wake it leaves on the River.

Escucho el sonido disfónico y metálico de un parlante ofrenciendo "chipa". Estos dos hermanos de la zona, cada domingo recorren en su vehículo vendiendo este infaltable alimento en las meriendas. Pescadores, gente que asistirá a misa o transeúntes erráticos como nosotros, son sus principales clientes.
I hear the dysphonic and metallic sound of a speaker offering "chipa". These two brothers in the area, every Sunday travel in a vehicle selling this snack food. Fishermen, people who attend Mass or erratic transients like us, are its main customers.

Un caminito creado con el andar, sin maquinarias, sin instrumentos, sino que tan sólo con el afán de llegar al destino, con la voluntad de alcanzar un objetivo; camino que guarda las huellas de gente que ha seguido este rumbo, y gente que ha partido para siempre. A path created with the walk, without machinery, without instruments, but only with the desire to reach the destination, with the aim of achieving an objective; a way that keeps the traces of people who have followed this course, and people who have gone for ever.

Mientras el viento soplaba y los mosquitos se convertían en numerosas y diminutas dagas incensantes, caminaba y hablaba con Tam en el espeso bosque que atravesábamos y le digo "esperá, vi algo". De nuevo, tengo la oportunidad de encontrarme con una libélula roja, como ya había ocurrido en el post anterior "Salto Cristal 2009". Estoy agradecido por este encuentro, con esta naturaleza bien preservada, simplemente a un río de distancia.
While the wind was blowing and the mosquitoes became incessant numerous tiny daggers, walked and talked with Tam in the thick woods crossed and say "wait, I saw something". Again, I have the opportunity to meet with a red dragonfly, as had happened in the previous post "Salto Cristal 2009." I am grateful for this encounter, with this well-preserved nature, just a river away.



Observamos esta fuerte y brillante telaraña que cruzaba el camino desde un árbol a otro. Pretendíamos continuar atravesando el espeso bosque y -a diferencia de Claudio, de John y de mí- los mosquitos hicieron lo posible por aguar el recorrido a las chicas del grupo, y no pudimos llegar a nuestro destino. El día lluvioso, el bosque húmedo, la proximidad del río y las alertas de dengue que tenemos en Asunción, son factores que potenciaron de alguna forma la cantidad de esa innecesaria plaga que en cada segundo que uno se detenía para tomar una foto, hacían un festín en nuestros cuellos, brazos y piernas.
We see this strong and brilliant spider web crossing the road from one tree to another. We wanted to continue through the dense forest and -unlike Claudio, John and me- mosquitoes did their best to water down the girls tour group and we could not reach our destination. The rainy day, the humid forest, the proximity of the river and the dengue alert in Asuncion are all factors that somehow boosted the amount of that unnecessary plague that every second that you stopped to take a picture, they made a feast in our neck, arms and legs.



Y de nuevo, un aguacero que comenzaba. En el riachuelo que bordeábamos en nuestro camino de regreso, no escatimo a capturar este instante donde las gotas caían tenuemente con cierto temor y recelo, mientras el astro rey seguía alumbrando con imponencia. Otra vez esas pequeñas gemas brillantes impactaban en la franja que conformaba el agua en esta imagen.
And again, a downpour began. In the stream that were driving on our way back, did not spare to capture this moment where the drops fell lightly with some fear and suspicion, while the sun king was shining with majesty. Again, those little sparkling gems impacted on the fringe as the water in this image.




Una pareja de bohemios se acercaba hacia nosotros. Él brasileño, ella argentina; viven en Chaco'i porque es mucho más tranquilo y barato que en la ciudad, viven de vender su arte en las diversas ferias de hippies de Asunción y sus alrededores, viven de la paz y del amor.
A bohemian couple coming towards us. Him Brazilian, she Argentinian, living in Chaco'i because it is much quieter and cheaper than in the city, living selling his art at various fairs hippies of Asunción and its surroundings, living in peace and love.



Aquí estamos otra vez en el improvisado puerto de Chaco'i, a la espera de que algún "tuku-tuku" vuelva hacia Playa Montevideo en Asunción. Mientras los pobladores nos decían cosas y hacían chistes sobre nuestras cámaras asociándonos con algún medio periodístico -y sobre todo porque a la llegada uno de nosotros sufrió un pequeño percance al intentar bajar del "tuku-tuku"-, este niño tan sólo miraba y se reía, mientras desde la tranquilidad de su hamaca disfrutaba de la apaciguada lluvia que soltaba sus últimas gotas. Ya no tendríamos de nuevo un arcoiris en el regreso.
Here we are again at the makeshift Chaco'i port, waiting for some "tuku-tuku" back to Playa Montevideo in Asuncion. While the people were saying things and making jokes about our cameras partnering with a media -and especially since the arrival one of us suffered a slight mishap when trying to get down from the "tuku-tuku"- this kid just looked and laughing, while from the comfort of their hammock enjoying the rain calmed unleashed his last drops. We would no longer have a rainbow again in our back travel.



La piel curtida por los años de sol, humedad o sequía se reflejan en la mano del lanchero quien día a día transita en su habitual derrotero, transportando almas de un punto a otro, combatiendo vientos, lluvias, tormentas, embates de las olas y algunas veces hasta neblina. Manos trabajadoras que absorbieron experiencia de miles de días.
The skin tanned by years of sun, humidity or drought are reflected in the hand of the boatman who travels daily in his usual route, carrying souls from one point to another, battling wind, rain, storm, clash of the waves and sometimes some fog. Working hands which absorbed experience of thousands of days.

En el bote, un niño nos muestra con orgullo el fruto de su pesca. El famoso "pira-jagua" (pez perro) que había sido capturado por él mismo. Nos comentaba que iba a hacer un chupin con su presa. On the boat, a child proudly shows us the fruit of their fishing. The famous "pira-jagua" (dog fish) that had been captured by him. We said he would do a Chupin (a sort of dry soup with vegetables) with their prey.

Otra vez me cruzo con el Kabure'i de Carlos, quien me saluda por babor, y me digo para mí mismo "Ojalá vuelvas a conducir las viejas lanchas del Mbigua, ojalá esas apagadas épocas de gloria regresen en el mismo corazón de la bahía".
Again I meet the Kabure'i of Carlos, who greets me on the port side, and I say to myself "I hope he drive back to the old craft of Mbigua, hopefully those glory days back in the same heart of the Bay" (the last is a fragment of the hymn of Mbigua Club).



El viejo puesto militar de la Marina -hoy en día con poca actividad y poco personal de guardia habitando en él-, se deja alumbrar por los últimos rayos solares del atardecer, ya estábamos llegando a casa nuevamente.
The old military post of the Navy -today, with little activity and few staff on duty dwell in him- is left lit by the last rays of sunset, we were coming home again.



Pero antes de desembarcar, me dejo llevar por la magnificencia de las nubes que combaten entre ellas, las nubes grises y las blancas y aquellas que aún capturan en su piel la luz del sol. Me dejo llevar por su quietud, por sus formas y colores.
But before landing, I get carried away by the magnificence of the clouds that fight between them, the gray and white clouds and those still caught in their skin the sunlight. I let go of its stillness, its shapes and colors.



Las aves revoloteaban mientras salía de Playa Montevideo y me asomaba a la Plaza de los Desaparecidos, esta imagen que la capturo así porque a veces me gusta la fuerza del minimalismo.
The birds fluttered as I left Playa Montevideo and I was going to the Plaza de los Desaparecidos, I captured this image because sometimes I like the power of minimalism.

Frente a la Plaza de los Desaparecidos, la vereda en perspectiva se disipa en el olvido, aludiendo el final de la historia de aquellos a quienes irónicamente se recuerda en esta plaza. Facing the Plaza de los Desaparecidos, the sidewalk in perspective vanishes into oblivion, citing the end of the story of those ironically recalled in this square.

Como lo hice en mi anterior viaje a Chaco'i, dejo como última imagen (porque en realidad fue la última que tomé), la torre más alta del Palacio de López, plasmada sobre un manto de nubes y cielo. Gracias por acompañarme en este viaje. As I did in my previous trip to Chaco'i, left as the last picture (because it really was the last I took), the highest tower of the Palacio de López, reflected on a blanket of clouds and sky. Jardín Botánico, mi zoológico, tu zoológico...

Jardín Botánico (Botanic Garden), my zoo, your zoo...

Esta vez me tocó hacer la aventura en forma solitaria. Más que una aventura fue un paseo, que me remontó a esos tiempos de mi niñez: del mal recorte de cabello, del vaquero nevado y del champión PONY. Sí, porque estoy hablando del Jardín Botánico, aquel lugar al que muchos así como yo sólo fueron cuando chicos, y después tan sólo nos dignamos a pasar en frente cuando nos dirigíamos a la Expo (y hay muchos que también dejaron de ir a la Expo). Este día de octubre de 2009, necesitaba hacer unas fotografías del Tucán y los Jaguareté del Zoológico, porque necesitaba esas imágenes para un proyecto en el que estaba trabajando. Entonces pensaba hacer una visita rápida al Botánico y retirarme, pero mi sorpresa fue grata, ya verán. No quisiera contar más de lo que debo en mi intro, pero no me resisto a comentar que el Botánico estaba cambiado y ya no era tan igual a como yo lo conocía. A excepción de que siga la misma elefante Maya o esté el mismo hipopótamo de hace más de 20 años, creo que eso es lo de menos, porque lo más loable aquí es el trabajo que se está haciendo para mantenerlo como un lugar placentero, bien familiar, seguro y en el que de a poco, se cambia la mentalidad para con los animales. Ya no se trata nomás de emular viejos atractivos circenses, sino que también se trata de preservar los pedazos de naturaleza que van desapareciendo, de generación en generación. Podés criticar la idea de tener animales encerrados, pero la ciencia y la sociedad necesitan de estos sacrificios con el objetivo de desarrollarnos como personas, para crear conciencia y conocer costumbres; porque es muy fácil criticar al zoológico cuando tu ropero, tu mesa y tu sillas pertenecen a una madera de algún árbol que no haya "querido" ser cortado.

This time I had to do in a solitary adventure. More than an adventure was a ride, I went back to those times of my childhood: the bad haircut, the acid washes jeans and PONY's sport shoes. Yes, I am talking about the Zoo of Asunción (Jardín Botánico), the place that many and I only get there when boys, and then we only go in front when we headed to the Expo (and there are many who also stopped going to the Expo). This day of October 2009, I needed to do some pictures of toucan and jaguar of the zoo, because I needed the images for a project I was working. Then I thought to do a quick visit to the Botanic and retire, but I have a pleasant surprise, you'll see. 10:52 - Dia 4 del mes de octubre de 2009, había pasado frente al Jardín Botánico pero me dirigía hacia Viñas Cue, a una unidad militar en la que no me dejaron ingresar con la cámara. De ahí vine caminando hasta el tranquilo y relajante lugar que es nuestro Zoológico. De igual modo logré hacer una de las fotos que quería en el mencionado campo del ejército desde el alambrado. Este bosque que fue plantado con pulcritud y orden militar es el tipo de lugares que me gusta, donde los árboles transportan la vista en perspectiva hacia el infinito. 10:52 - Day 4 October 2009, had passed the Zoo but I headed to a military unit in Viñas Cue that would not let me enter with the camera. From there I came walking up to the quiet and relaxing place that is our Zoo. Similarly I could do one of the photos I want in that army camp from the fence. This forest was planted with neatness and military order is the kind of places I like, where trees carry the perspective view into infinity.

11:30 - Luego de 40 minutos de caminata que no me hicieron nada mal, llegué al acceso posterior del parque natural que rodea el Zoológico. Lugar recomendado por sus árboles, por la tranquilidad, por la paz y por el ambiente familiar que se repite en cada sombra de cada copa. Caminando por la vereda de la calle interna que nos acerca al Zoo, me fijo en uno de los árboles que sufrió los vientos fuertes que azotaron el país en los últimos días. La magnitud del fenómeno natural se refleja en el resultado de la imagen, producto de una fuerza abrumadora que permitió romper un tronco joven pero grueso como si fuese de cristal. Felizmente el tronco tampoco había terminado en el suelo.
11:30 - After a 40 minute walk that was good for my health, I got to the rear access of the natural park surrounding the zoo. Place recommended, for the good amount of trees, the tranquility, peace and family atmosphere that is repeated in every shade of each cup. Walking along the path of the internal road that leads us to the Zoo, I look at one of the trees suffered from strong winds that hit the country in recent days. The magnitude of the natural phenomenon is reflected in the resulting image, a product of overwhelming force to break a log young but thick as if made of glass. Fortunately, the trunk had not ended on the floor.



Pero los árboles no siempre tienen un final trágico y abrupto como en el caso anterior, debido a alguna tormenta o cualquier otro desastre natural. A veces, los árboles cumplen su ciclo de vida donde directamente dicen "basta" y deciden morir; o algunos siguen en pie y lo harán por mucho tiempo. En el parque natural del Botánico, existen muchos restos de árboles que recuerdan una época en donde fueron jóvenes, fuertes y donde bajo su sombra familias han disfrutado, hamacas se habrán colgado, parejas habrán dormido y algunas su nombre habrán escrito. Los árboles aún en pie, junto con los jóvenes son el vago reflejo de un tiempo donde este parque natural era nada más que un bosque.
But the trees do not always have a tragic and abrupt end as in the previous case, due to a storm or other natural disaster. Sometimes the trees met their life cycle which directly say "enough" and decide to die, or some still standing and will do so for long. In the nature of the Botanic Garden, there are many remains of trees that remember a time where they were young, strong and where under its shadow families have enjoyed, hammocks where hanged, couples have sleeped and other have written their names. The trees still standing, along with the young ones are the vague reflection of a time when this park was nothing more than a forest.

Ya ingresé al sector de los animales, alejándome de tanta paz y tranquilidad que me ofrecían los árboles y el zumbido agradable y soporífero que provocaba el viento entre sus hojas. El precio de acceso es de 1.500 Gs., si uno viene a pie, el precio para los vehículos es de 5.000 Gs. Todavía hay gente tonta, que ingresa por el lado posterior creyendo que se ahorra el monto, sin embargo gastó lo mismo en combustible.

I entered the animal sector, away from peace and quiet they offered me the trees and the pleasant and soporific hum that caused the wind in their leaves. The access price is 1,500 Gs. (approx. 30¢). If you come on foot, the price for the vehicles is 5,000 Gs. (approx. 1 US$). There are still stupid people, that access through the back side believing that the amount is saved, however the same is spent in fuel.

Uno de los primeros lugares que tenemos a mano es un campo amplio donde están los Ñandu (Avestruz) y otras aves. A este especímen al parecer le gustaba la cámara. One of the first places we have on hand is an open field where they are the Ñandu (Ostrich, you can pronnounce "Ñandu" from Guarani language easily: for the Ñ, use the "ny" like in "canyon", for the "an" use the one in "stand", and for "du" just say "do") and other birds. This specimen apparently liked the camera.

El sector de los leones tiene dos vallas de seguridad, quizás porque en el pasado la gente se acercaba mucho por su mala costumbre de no cumplir las reglas. El león dormía plácidamente, sin importarle nuestra presencia, ni los niños gritándole para que despierte, ni el murmullo de las señoras que a pesar de las vallas, aún tienen miedo. Debido a la doble valla es imposible tomar una fotografía sin que la valla interna moleste en la imagen. Quizás algún día cambien el sistema por el de un hábitat tipo subterráneo, en donde el león no se sentirá tan enjaulado y tenga un espacio más abierto.
The sector of the lions has two security fences, perhaps because in the past people came close to much for his bad habit of not follow the rules. The lion was sleeping peacefully, regardless of our presence, nor children to wake up screaming, or the murmur of the women who in spite of the fences are still afraid. Because of the double fence is impossible to take a picture without the inside fence disturbing the image. Maybe someday they will change the system by underground type of habitat, where the lion will not feel caged and have a more open space.

Como había comentado anteriormente, un hábitat al estilo subterráneo, con una cueva por ejemplo, sería la solución especial para estos hermosos animales. Aquí el Jaguareté joven mira hacia el firmamento, quizás buscando alcanzar la libertad. En el tipo de hábitat que me refiero, el cielo no tiene rejas ni nada como en el caso de la jaula. As said before, a habitat underground style, with a cave for example, would be the special solution for these beautiful animals. Here the young jaguar looks into the sky, perhaps looking to achieve freedom. In the type of habitat I mean, the sky has no bars or anything like in the case of the cage.

Llegué al renovado sector de la elefante Maya. La gente aún critica que se encuentra en un lugar que no le hace bien, pero años atrás el lugar no estaba mejor. Es muy fácil criticar y no inducir a que se visite más el botánico, total creen que el apoyo de la Municipalidad es suficiente; pero recordemos que así como la Municipalidad, nosotros muchas veces nos olvidamos del Botánico por años. Si la concurrencia fuese masiva también serán los ingresos, y con los ingresos económicos vienen las mejoras. Una lógica muy simple, natural.
I came to the new field of Maya elephant. People still complains that is in a place that does not do well, but years ago the place was not better. It is very easy to criticize and not induce pleople a further visit to the Zoo, they believe the total support of the Municipality is enough, but remember that as the City, we often forget the Jardín Botánico for years. El hermoso Papagayo azul, me mira con extrañeza. Quizás es uno de los pocos animales cuyo hábitat es completamente limitado, yo diría que demasiado incluso. En otros países, los hábitats para aves están preparadas para que los mismos puedan volar libremente. Normalmente esta especie no procrea de manera fácil cuando está en cautiverio, aunque lo hace sólo si las condiciones se adecuan para ello.
The beautiful Blue Parrot, looks at me quizzically. Perhaps one of the few animals whose habitat is completely limited, I'd say too much even. In other countries, habitats for birds are prepared for them to fly freely. Normally this species not breeds easily when in captivity, but it does so only if conditions are suitable for it.



Finalmente llegué a la jaula de una de las aves más hermosas que tenemos en el país, de esas que en un bosque cerrado y protegido aún podemos encontrar. El Tucán, que fue uno de los principales motivos de mi visita al Botánico. Me quedo en silencio admirando los colores de su pico, y mis pensamientos se transportan en algún lugar del medio del Chaco, donde estos inocentes animales aún disfrutan su libertad y sólo sufren del terror de las armas de quienes le dan caza, esos cazadores que son más animales que sus propias presas.
I finally got to the cage of one of the most beautiful birds we have in the country, such as in a closed and protected forests can still be found. The Toucan, who was one of the main reasons for my visit to the Zoo. I think this is the Bobcat, which combines the shape of a large cat with the ferocity of a puma. In this case, apparently combined with the sweetness of an innocent pet. The Bobcat looks at me, lying down, quiet, perhaps waiting for someone to scratch his belly.

Llegué a un área nuevo del Zoológico, que había sido inaugurada hacía poco tiempo. Es el lugar donde recrearon un hábitat natural para ciertos animales. En ese lugar al primero que encuentro es el Mborevi (Tapir). I came to a new area of the Zoo, which had been opened a few weeks ago. It's where recreated a natural habitat for certain animals. En el nuevo área, existe una plataforma donde uno puede subir y llega a un mirador ubicado como a 2 metros de altura, de ahí puede obtenerse una linda vista del lugar, que contiene un lago artificial. En este hábitat también encontré un Pavo, y aún no subí al mirador.
In the new area, there is a platform where one can go up and come to a viewpoint located about 6 feets high, hence can be obtained a fine view of the site, which contains an artificial lake. In this habitat I also found a turkey, and I'm not yet go to the lookout.



Espero mi turno para subir al mirador, porque había una pequeña fila con un guardia que controlaba para que sea ordenado el acceso. Desde arriba, puedo ver un Ganso nadando apacible en el pequeño lago, con tanta fineza y soltura que hasta parecía un Cisne.

El sol comienza a quemar la piel, a perforar las sombras de los árboles. Desde el mirador puedo observar cómodo y protegido, un Oso Hormiguero, que también deambulaba en el hábitat. Me gusta ver cómo estos animales conviven juntos en este espacio.
The sun begins to burn the skin, to pierce the shadows of the trees. From the viewpoint I can look comfortable and protected, an anteater, who also wandered in the habitat. I like to see how these animals live together in this space.

Como ya fotografié las especies que estaban en el agua y en la tierra, me faltaba hacerlo con los de los árboles. Estos monitos jugaban peligrosamente entre las ramas, colgados, desafiando la gravedad y haciendo uso de su habilidad. La mejor vista sin dudas se consigue desde aquí arriba.
As I photographed the species that were in the water and earth, I needed to do with trees. These monkeys were playing dangerously with the branches, hanging, defying gravity and making use of his ability. The best view is undoubtedly get up here.



Capturo la última imagen desde el mirador, porque no quiero privar a otra persona el turno; y el Mborevi (Tapir) nadaba en el lago desde la isla interna que se forma, retornando hacia la costa.

Me acerco a los cuidadores del Zoológico explicándoles mi visita, y me permitieron acceder con mucho cuidado a ciertas áreas de acceso restringido al personal o bien como en mi caso, el acceso era controlado y en constante compañía de los cuidadores. Me permitieron ingresar al estanque donde habita uno de los Hipopótamos. Si mal no recuerdo, el Botánico tiene tres de estos animales. Momento que no podría olvidar nunca, me permitieron llegar hasta la primera valla de los Jaguaretés. El Zoológico cuenta con tres de estos animales, que son Charly, Santaní y Esperanza. Aquí, un breve instante en que pude encontrarlos en su guarida.
Time I could not ever forget, the keepers let me get to the first fence of the jaguar. The zoo has three of these animals, which are Charly, Santaní and Esperanza (Hope). Here, a brief moment I could find in his lair.



Uno de ellos se me acercó como a 40 centímetros. Mi corazón latía rápidamente, trataba de concentrarme en obtener la imagen, y esperaba que mi equipo no perturbe la tranquilidad del animal y me ruja. Detrás mío, unas señoras se quejaban del ambiente en que viven estos animales. Puedo asegurar que es mejor que en campo abierto, totalmente desprotegidos de la caza furtiva e indiscriminada.
One of them approached me as 16 inches. My heart was beating fast, trying to concentrate on getting the picture, and hoped that my equipment does not disturb the tranquility of the animal and roar to me. Behind me, some women complained about the environment in which these animals live. I can assure you that is better than in the open field, totally unprotected and indiscriminate poaching.



No, no tenía una mirada de tristeza ni pesar. Tenía una mirada de juguetón, le gustaba morder el alambre... y juguetones dije, porque ya no son tan salvajes, porque en el Botánico se les trata bien -no quizás como sería en zoológicos del primer mundo- pero se les trata bien, en medio de las posibilidades existentes. Me acerqué bastante, ¿no?
No, he doesn't had a look of sadness or grief. He had a playful look, he liked to bite the wire... and playful I said, because they are not so wild, because in the Botanic are treated as well -might not be like in zoos from the first world- but they were treated well, among the possibilities. I approached a lot, right?



El cuidador me dice que lo iba a alimentar y por ello lo iba a llevar hacia la puerta que está en el interior de la jaula. De esa manera me podía ofrecer el espectáculo de cuerpo completo de este hermoso animal. Es joven, sí, pero es grande y su juventud no le quita la ferocidad.
The keeper tells me that he was going to feed the jaguar and therefore what was going to take the door that is inside the cage. That way I could have the spectacle of the entire body of this beautiful animal. He's young, yes, but is large and does not detract from his youth ferocity.



Domingo, calor, tranquilidad, paz. Las familias acuden al Zoológico del Jardín Botánico, a admirar los animales que raras veces encontrarás en alguna selva del interior. Sin dudas es una actividad sana y educativa.
Sunday, warmth, tranquility, peace. Families come to the Zoo Botanic Garden to admire the animals rarely find in any jungle of the country. It's clearly a healthy and educational activity.

Si uno no va a visitar el Zoológico, puede disfrutar del Jardín Botánico que es el parque natural que rodea el zoo. Como decía al inicio de este post, es un lugar recomendado por sus árboles, su paz, y el oxígeno que se respira ante tanta vegetación. If you're not going to visit the Zoo, you can enjoy the Botanic Garden which is the natural park surrounding the zoo. As I said at the beginning of this post is a place recommended for its trees, peace, and the oxygen we breathe with so much vegetation.

Espero visitar de nuevo el Botánico, pero con más tiempo de manera a fotografiar más animales. Esta vez fui con un misión específica, pero la próxima iré en una misión personal. Ya saben, un Domingo cualquiera, es cuestión de preparar el "avío" (lonchera), un mantel, un buen tereré o gaseosas, de ser posible una hamaca paraguaya y venir a desparramarse sin miedo ni vergüenza, en el pasto verde bajo la sombra de un frondoso árbol. El Jardín Botánico espera, sí... la vida no.

I hope to again visit the Botanic, but with more time to photograph way more animals. This time I went with a specific mission, but next go on a personal mission. You know, any given Sunday is a matter of preparing the "avío" (lunch box), a tablecloth, a good tereré or soda, if possible, a hammock and forth to spread without fear or shame in the green grass under the shade of a leafy tree. The Botanic Garden awaits, yes... life's not.
