Encarnación: city of the future, present and past

Encarnación, capital del Departamento de Itapúa y situada a más de 360 Kms de la Capital es una ciudad con visión de futuro, con un presente próspero y un pasado dividido. Anteriormente la visité este año en los viajes de "Buscando el guiso más rico", pero esta vez, fui a la Inauguración de la Costanera donde se realizó una verdadera fiesta. Antes de contarles sobre mi viaje, quiero ahondar en el concepto de un pasado dividido, ya que en esta visita encontré opiniones divididas sobre la evolución de la ciudad, en detrimento del patrimonio histórico. Como todos sabrán, gran parte del pasado de esta hermosa ciudad, quedó sepultada bajo las aguas del progreso. Ahí comienza la división, en un país en el que estamos acostumbrados a dividirnos, pero el hombre en la historia misma del mundo, ha tenido que echar árboles para construir caminos. En nuestro país, la historia clama por su espacio y reconocimiento cuando las paredes se derrumban y recién ahí nos rasgamos las vestiduras, como lo habrán visto en mi POST anterior "Estaciones de añoranza (Parte 1)". Encarnación sufrió esa tempestad, pero buscando un futuro mejor, para situarse como una ciudad con miras al turismo. Si lo analizan, nuestras ciudades fronterizas se caracterizan por el fuerte comercio como Ciudad del Este o Pedro Juan Caballero. Encarnación se va a caracterizar por el turismo y por ofrecer un polo estratégico no sólo para los negocios sino para el sano esparcimiento, claro que para algunos en detrimento de su historia. Aún así, algo se ha logrado, y algo se ha rescatado o por lo menos se intentará rescatar, como la vieja Estación de Tren que sufrió un duro golpe al ser derribada en un sector de forma impune, para luego ser encomendada a manos trabajadoras y profesionales en su "deconstrucción" y así logrará ser reubicada en otro lugar. No todo está perdido, Encarnación va a crecer gigantescamente como lo está haciendo hoy mismo, y parte de su historia será salvaguardada gracias a los ingresos que obtendrá el Municipio. Siempre existe un grado de escepticismo en este caso, pero yo aún confío en que el resultado se verá al final. El Paraguayo está acostumbrado a derribar por el camino, ya sean dogmas o el trabajo ajeno, sin esperar el resultado. El 17 de Diciembre de 2011, se inauguró el resultado de este trabajo de varios años, y recuerdo yo que no había visitado la mal llamada "Perla del Sur" (el nombre es incorrecto, pues, Mcal López lo usaba para referirse   a Pilar) desde 2006 hasta mediados de 2011. Mi sorpresa fue gigante al ver los cambios en esos 5 años, y fue aún mayor en mi viaje de Diciembre al ver más desarrollo terminado. Encarnacenos, siéntanse orgullosos de mostrar a mundo en lo que se ha convertido su ciudad y en lo que va a convertirse, no tengan vergüenza ni dolor por el pasado que se ha ahogado, aún hay muchas cosas por hacer y el final no será triste. En todas las guerras hay bajas, nuestro propio país lo sufrió dos veces, pero lo más importante es que aún nos mantenemos en pie y queremos hacer bien las cosas. Lo incidentado de mi viaje es algo que no quiero dejar de contar, porque me costó llegar a Encarnación. Ese día bien temprano había comprado mi pasaje de ida, en la Terminal, porque antes debía estar en Sapucay para el acto de entrega de los trabajos de restauración ya terminados de los Talleres (notable coincidencia). Alrededor de las 3 de la tarde estaría pasando mi colectivo por Paraguarí y lo iba a abordar ahí tal como lo hablé con el encargado de la empresa Alborada. No fue así, el colectivo llegó prácticamente cerca de las 4 y no detuvo su marcha en el lugar indicado y ante mi señal de parada. De ahí fueron como 2 horas de espera y llamados y reclamos efusivos de mi parte por teléfono, hasta que llegó un "Flecha de Oro", con el cual tuve que viajar de pie hasta kilómetros antes de Villa Florida. Finalmente llegué a destino dos horas y media más tarde, por lo que me perdí gran parte del show artístico, sobre todo lo que me interesaba: Berta Rojas, la Orquesta Sinfónica, Vocal 2 y los Ojeda. Pero llegué, eso era lo importante, y tuve el privilegio de encontrarme nuevamente con esta belleza de ciudad. Bienvenidos a la nueva Encarnación.

Encarnación, the capital of the Itapúa Department, located some 360km from Asunción is a city with futuristic vision, a prosperous present and a divided past. I went there earlier on this year on the travels while "Looking for the best meat and rice dish", this time I went to the opening of the riverside bath where a party took place. Before telling you about my trip, I want to focus a bit on the concept of a divided past as during this trip I came across with a variety of opinions on the evolution of the city, against the heritage. As everyone should know, a large part of this beautiful city was submerged under the water of progress. This is where the division began, in a country where we are used to being divided while the man in the very world history has had to cut down trees to build the path. In our country, the history cries out for space and acknowledgement and only when the walls break down we realise the loss, as you might have seen on my earlier post "Stations of Nostalgia (Part 1)". Encarnación went through that storm but seeking for a better future to place itself as a city for tourism. If you analyse it, our border towns are known for strong commerce such as Ciudad del Este and Pedro Juan Caballero. Encarnación is focusing on tourism by offering a strategic point not only for business but also for recreation, though for some this clearly goes against the city's history. Even so, some of it has been recovered or is at least hoped to recover, such as the old Train Station which was harshly demolished and is now being rebuilt by workers and professionals and replaced elsewhere in the city. Everything is not lost, Encarnación is taking huge steps in growth and part of the history will be rescued thanks to the income obtained by the Townhall. There will always be certain scepticism but I still believe that the results will be seen in the end. Paraguayans are used to giving up in the middle of a way, should it be for a dogma or someone else's project, without waiting to see the results. On December 17th 2011, the result of this work that lasted for years had its opening, I remember I hadn't visited the wrong called "Southern Pearl" (the name is used by mistake, because Mcal. López use it to refers to other city, Pilar) since 2006 until mid-2011. I was greatly surprised to see the changes that took place during those 5 years and even more surprised during my last trip in December to see the final results. People of Encarnación, feel proud to show the world how your city has changed and how it will change, don't feel embarrassed or pain for the past, there is a lot to do and the end won't be sad. In every war there are victims, our country has suffered it twice but the most important thing is that we still keep strong and we want to do things well. I won't leave out how I struggled to get to Encarnación.I had bought a oneway ticket early that day at the terminal as I had to get to Sapucay for a ceremony for the final works of restoration workshops (excellent timing). Around 3pm I was to take a bus from Paraguarí as I had agreed with the Alborada bus company. That didn't happen, the bus arrived around 4pm and did not stop when I hailed for it. I had to wait for another 2h, calling and complaining on the phone until another company "Flecha de Oro" showed up. I had to travel standing until Villa Florida. I finally got there two and half hours late which meant I had missed most of the show, especially the artists I was mostly looking forward seeing: Berta Rojas, the Symphonic Orchestra, Vocal 2 and Los Ojeda. The most important thing is that I did arrive and I was privileged to come across with this beautiful city again. Welcome to new Encarnación.

22:33 - Antes de dirigirme a la fiesta por la inauguración a la nueva Costanera, una parada obligatoria la tuve en la Catedral de Encarnación, cuya construcción comenzó en 1928 y fue terminada 10 años después. Hoy en día cuenta con una hermosa iluminación que la permite sobresalir en el horizonte de la ciudad.
22:33 - Before heading to the opening of the new riverside path, a must stop was at the Cathedral of Encarnación, which was built in 1928 and finished 10 years later. Today it has a beautiful lightning allowing it to stand out in the city horizon.

La fiesta en la Costanera fue patrocinada por diversos organismos del Estado. Participaron artistas como Berta Rojas, La Orquesta Sinfónica, Los Ojeda, y figuras internacionales como Vicentico y Carlos Baute.
The riverside path party was sponsored by several public institutions. Artists such as Berta Rojas, the Symphonic Orchestra, Los Ojeda and international singers Vicentico and Carlos Baute took part of it.

Gracias al Cuerpo de Bomberos de Encarnación -y sobre todo a mi amigo Marcos Chudyk quien habló con el comandante- tengo el privilegio de subir los 30 metros de su escalera de incendios y puedo obtener una vista casi general de la magnitud del espectáculo, que reunió aproximadamente a 50.000 personas.
Thanks to the Fire Station of Encarnación and especially to my friend Marcos Chudyk who spoke with the commandant, I was privileged to climb up a 30m tall fire ladder and enjoy almost a full view on the show which gathered around 50.000 people.

La nueva costanera, aludiendo a ciudad de futuro y pasado al que me refiero en el inicio de este POST, guarda como testimonio las antiguas construcciones del molino harinero San José y el silo de granos.
The new riverside path, referring to the future and the past I mentioned in the beginning of this post, holds to old constructions of the San José mill and the grain silo as a testimony.

El proyecto de la Costanera de Encarnación tiene como objetivo alcanzar una longitud de más de 27 kilómetros.
The Encarnación riverside path project is to reach a length of more than 27km.

01:28 - Luego de más de una hora y media de show de Carlos Baute quien cerró el show artístico, arrancaron los fuegos artificiales, dándole color al cielo Encarnaceno.

Más de 11 minutos de variados colores y diseños surcaron la periferia de la nueva costanera, llenando de alegría y emoción los corazones de los presentes.
More than 11 minutes of variations of colours and designs flying through the new riverside path area filled the audience with joy and excitement in their hearts.

03:30 - El estilo de vida nocturno encarnaceno colapsó esa noche, ante la masiva presencia de gente y la falta de lugares y provisiones. Cerca de las 3 AM, deambulando solitario por el centro y sin nadie conocido, recibo un mensaje que me quita de la soledad y me encuentro con mi amigo Borys Czeraniuk, con quien junto con su grupo hacemos una recorrida por varios lugares buscando alguna comida rápida, pero fue infructuosa. Finalmente volvemos al lugar donde ellos hacía una hora atrás habían pedido una pizza (Benndo Pizza) y el retraso se dio sólo por la cantidad inusual de gente.
03:30 - The night life in Encarnación collapsed that night, due to the massive audience and lack of places and services. Around 3am, walking around alone by the city centre and not knowing anyone, I get a message taking away my loneliness and I meet up with my friend Borys Czeraniuk, together with him and a group of his friends we walk around trying to find some fast food place but without any success. We end up going back to the place where they had ordered a pizza an hour ago (Benndo Pizza) which only delayed due to the unusual number of customers.

16:11 - Luego de ser beneficiado con la hospitalidad de la familia de Borys a quienes acompañé en el almuerzo, me lleva a conocer el Santuario de la Virgen de Itacua. Un niño ordena los rosarios en las afueras del Oratorio, ubicado a 8km del casco urbano de Encarnación
16:11 - After enjoying lunch thanks to the family of Borys who invited me along, he takes me to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Itacua. A boy sorts out the rosaries outside the chapel, some 8km away from the centre of Encarnación.

Antigua casa de madera que pertenecía a uno de los primeros pobladores de la zona. Anteriormente esta casa estaba ubicada en una zona baja, pero la EBY se encargó de su "deconstrucción" y reubicación en la entrada a la zona del Oratorio.
An old wooden house that belonged to the one of the first settlers in the zone. Previously the house was located in the lower zone but the Bi-national Entity Yacyreta took care of the reconstruction and relocated it at the entrance of the chapel zone.

Bosque del Oratorio de la Virgen de Itacua, cuya pendiente nos lleva hasta el Oratorio en sí. Aquí, familias y personas disfrutan de la sombra y el aire fresco durante todo el año, convirtiéndose en lugar bien cuidado y aprovechado.
The woods of the Chapel of the Virgin of Itacua, where the path takes us to the Chapel itself. Here families and visitors enjoy the shade and fresh air all through the year, making the place well taken care of and in full use.

Una mujer enciende una vela en el Oratorio de la Virgen de Itacua. La historia cuenta que a los marinos les aparecía la Virgen en este lugar, protegiéndolos para no chocar contra las rocas en sus viajes, razón por la que decidieron brindarle un homenaje creando un santuario.
A woman lighting a candle at the Chapel of the Virgin of Itacua. The story tells that the Virgin would appear to the sailors in this place, protecting them from crashing against the rocks during their trips, which is why they decided to pay tribute by creating a sanctuary.

Largos caminos de piedra y ladrillos permiten recorrer la ruta que lleva al santuario conocida como "La Ruta del Peregrino", donde puede disfrutarse del paisaje y el viento fresco. Cada 8 de Diciembre, al igual que los peregrinos lo hacen en Caacupé, aquí también llegan hasta el oratorio para cumplir sus promesas y agradecer.
Long lanes made out of stones and bricks allow to explore the route taking to the sanctuary, known as the "Route of the Pilgrim" where one can enjoy the landscape and fresh air. Each December 8th, just as the pilgrims in Caacupé, people also come to the Chapel here to keep their promises and say thanks.

Moderna Iglesia de la Virgen de Itacua, diseñada por el arquitecto Rodolfo Sténico. Por esa devoción marinera hacia la Virgen, su arquitectura tiene ciertos rasgos como los de un barco.
The modern church of the Virgin of Itacua, designed by the architect Rodolfo Sténico. Due to the marine devotion towards the Virgin, the architecture in a way reminds of a ship.

17:12 - Volviendo de Itacua, pasamos por el nuevo circuito comercial de Encarnación. Vagones de ADM, casi sepultados a plena vista, permanecen inmunes al tiempo.
17:12 - On the way back from Itacua, we passed by the new shopping area of Encarnación. The carriages of the train company, almost buried at first sight, remain untouched by the time.

17:30 - Una pandorga sobrevuela cierta parte del cielo encarnaceno en las cercanías de la antigua chimenea que pertenecía a Fabril.

Fabril era una de las fábricas más grandes de Encarnación, que daba trabajo a más del 70% de los pobladores de la ciudad. Hoy en día tan sólo permanece erguida una sola de sus chimeneas, como testimonio de la historia y baluarte del crecimiento y prosperidad de todo un pueblo.
Fabril was one of the largest factories in Encarnación giving work to more than 70% of the people in the city. Nowadays only one of the chimneys remains standing, as a testimony of the past and a stronghold of the growth and prosperity of the whole city.

En marzo de 2011, la EBY concreta la finalización de la Costanera Padre Bolik, uno de los primeros logros que cambia radicalmente la cara de Encarnación y da la bienvenida a los visitantes.
In March 2011, Bi-national Entity Yacyreta finished the riverside path "Priest Bolik", one of the first achievements which radically changes the face of Encarnación and welcomes the visitors.

En mi visita de hoy, me despido de la ciudad, dejando un pedazo de mi corazón aquí para poder volver siempre.
I say good-bye to Encarnación, leaving a piece of my heart behind so I can always come back.

Playa San José 2012 / Playa San José 2012 Aquí les presento las fotografías de Don Rubén Otazu Bordón, quien gentilmente me permitió publicarlas en el blog, de manera a mostrarles el éxito de este polo turístico en que se convirtió la ciudad. Here I present the photographs of Mr. Ruben Otazu Bordon, who allowed me to publish this on the blog, so as to show you the success of this tourist resort in the city.

Una gran fiesta se llevó a cabo en la madrugada del 1 de enero de 2012, donde más de 10.000 personas disfrutaron de la playa hasta el amanecer. En la mañana del primer día de 2012, mientras muchos volvían a sus casas para descansar, familias y veraneantes se acercaban a la Playa San José que ya estaba habilitada al público. La playa cuenta con bañeros, alquileres de kayaks y paseos en lancha.
A big party started in the night of January 1st of 2012, were more than 10.000 people enjoyed the beach untill the dawn. Early in the morning of the first day of 2012, while a some people come back to their houses to rest, a lot of families and visitors come to the San José Beach which was available to the public. The beach has baywatch, rent of kayaks and boat trips.

El centro de Encarnación se volvió una zona de veraneantes, donde sus nuevas playas reciben la visita de más de mil personas por día.
The downtown of Encarnación became an area of vacationers, where this new beaches are visited by over a thousand people per-day.

Muchas gracias por acompañarme en este viaje hasta el final. Además quiero agradecer a Don Ruben Otazu Bordon, quien me facilitó sus fotografías de la situación actual y cotidiana de la Playa San José, que recibe constantemente la visita de habitantes y turistas para refrescarse y disfrutar de las aguas del Paraná. También agradezco a Borys Czeraniuk y a su familia por haberme acogido de manera tal que me hicieron sentir un miembro más de la casa, permitiéndome volver junto a ellos con las puertas abiertas en mis futuros viajes a Encarnación. Espero que muchos de Uds. piensen que el turismo por nuestras tierras nunca debe relegarse a un segundo lugar, lo que nos ofrece Paraguay tiene su magia y tiene su encanto. Convirtámonos en turistas en nuestra propia tierra, que es lo que yo hago constantemente. Encarnación y su gente, con mucho orgullo nos abren sus puertas y nos reciben con alegría, sintámonos parte del cambio en la sociedad, a estas alturas ya no me importan los cambios políticos, mas sí los cambios en la sociedad, porque somos quienes vamos a llevar el progreso y una nueva mentalidad cuando nuestra generación tenga la oportunidad de ser protagonista. Encarnación -para mí- ya no es como la llaman  érroneamente La Perla, sino El Diamante del Sur.

Encarnación and their people, very proudly open their doors and receive Us with joy, let be feel ourselves part of the change in the society, at this point I don't care about political changes, but I do on the changes in the society, because we are who will take the progress and a new development when our generation will have the oportunity to become leader. Encarnación -to me- isn't how they call it by mistake, The Pearl, because now is the Southern Diamond.
