Siguiendo los pasos del Pa'i Oliva en el Bañado Sur

Following the footsteps of Pa'i Oliva in the Bañado Sur (Southern marsh/swamp)

Ante todo, mil disculpas por no haber publicado nada más en Enero luego de mis 3 entradas anteriores, es que estuvimos de viaje con Lyng por varias ciudades y si bien aproveché los paisajes de Argentina-Chile para fotografiar, no me puse al día con todo el material que me queda pendiente del año pasado, y lo estoy haciendo ahora.

First of all, apologies for not having published anything else in January after my three previous entries, I were with Lyng on traveling to several cities and while I took the Argentina-Chile landscapes to photograph, I caught up with all material that remains to me last year, and I'm doing now.

Justamente ahora, un año después me dispongo a levantar este material que es sobre la obra del Francisco de Paula Oliva (Pa'i Oliva), en el bañado sur, en donde se harían unas fotografías para ser utilizadas en su libro. Siguiendo sus pasos conocí algo de su incesante trabajo social que sin saberlo yo, se remonta allá desde mediados de la década del 60's cuando llegó a Paraguay. Esta entrada del blog, desea compartir con Uds. un viaje corto y por no decir muy pequeño, sobre la grandísima obra que viene realizando este "compatriota por voluntad propia".

Right now, a year after I get ready to lift this material about the work of Francisco de Paula Oliva (Oliva Pa'i, or Father Oliva), in the southern swamp, where photographs would be made for use in his book. Following in his footsteps I met some of his incessant social work without knowing, it was back there since the mid 60's when he arrived in Paraguay. This blog entry, want to share with you a short trip and very little to say on the great work being done by this "fellow voluntarily.

13:59 - Los niños nos miraban atentamente cuando llegamos. Capaz que no entienden lo que estamos haciendo pero conocen al Padre Oliva, y saben que ayuda a sus familias.
13:59 - The kids were watching us closely when we arrived. Maybe they cannot understand what we are doing but they know the Father Oliva, and know that helping their families.



14:02 - A pesar de las limitaciones del lugar en cuanto a electricidad, agua, servicios sanitarios, etc, evidentemente nada detiene a una persona en cuanto a sus derechos, y los niños nunca dejan de ejercer su profesión.
14:02 - Despite the limitations of place as electricity, water, sanitation, etc, of course nothing stops a person in regard to their rights, and children never cease to exercise their profession: being childs.



14:03 AM - Una bandera orgullosa flameaba en la entrada de una casa, en un país que aunque no da las oportunidades, la gente aún tiene esperanza.

14:18 - Pa'i Oliva caminaba sobre un puente construido gracias a su ayuda. Luego se recuesta, seguramente pensando no en todo lo que ya consiguió en estos años, sino que en lo que aún cree que le falta conseguir.

14:26 - Las amas de casa del barrio que viven cuidando a sus hijos y los hijos de las demás familias, nos dieron un cálido saludo de bienvenida, muy por en contra de las circunstancias en que se rige la vida en este lugar de nuestra Asunción. Ellas juntos con cientos de familias del lugar, recibieron mucha ayuda y apoyo de Pa'i Oliva.
14:26 - The neighborhood housewives living caring for their children and children of other families, they gave us a warm greeting, much against the circumstances that govern life in this place of our Asunción. They together with hundreds of local families, received much help and support of Pa'i Oliva.



14:28 - Esta señora tiene un rol digno de ejemplificar y elogiar. Ella fue docente, vive en el bañado con sus hijos, y todos los días prepara (junto con las demás señoras que se quedan en el barrio) el almuerzo para una gran cantidad de hijos de todas aquellas mujeres que vienen a trabajar a la ciudad. No sólo Pa'i Oliva es el único que actúa, sino que las propias personas hacen también su parte de manera a que se geste aquello que define a una verdadera sociedad: todos trabajan como socios en un gran objetivo que beneficie a todos.
14:28 - This lady has a role to exemplify and praise worthy. She was a teacher, lives in the marsh with their children, and prepares daily (along with the other ladies who stay in the neighborhood) lunch for a large number of children of women who come to work in the city. Not just Pa'i Oliva is the only acting but also the people themselves do their part so to be geste what defines a true partnership: all partners work as a major objective that benefits everyone.



14:32 - En este tipo de tachos es donde preparan comida para una buena cantidad de niños y adultos, todos los días. Reciben donaciones de alimentos para tal efecto. Lo principal es vivir y aguantar con esperanza hasta que la situación mejore.
14:32 - In this type of cans is where they prepare food for a good amount of children and adults every day. They receive food donations for this purpose. The main thing is to live and hold on to hope until the situation improves.



14:37 - Esta imagen no busca desinformar y victimizar la situación alegando que "los niños viven en situación precaria porque...". No, esta es una imagen simpática de un niño que acosado por el calor decidió desvestirse para jugar, y vino a mirar qué hacíamos.

14:41 - Aquí nos mostraba esta suerte de pequeña alacena en donde guardan todo aquello que reciben y que van a utilizar día a día. Esta imagen refleja que para esta gente "...el corazón es grande".

14:36 - Uno de los niños al parecer "no se hallaba" (no se sentía a gusto) con nuestra presencia. Sólo tenía sonrisas para su mamá.
14:36 - One of the children apparently "was not" (did not feel comfortable) with our presence. He had only smiles for his mom.



14:47 - Y nos despedimos de este sector del bañado, rumbo a otra área... "Chau bebé, chau...".
14:47 - And we say goodbye to this sector of the marsh, heading to another place... "Bye baby, bye..."



14:47 - En el camino encontré a estos dos niños bañándose, en situaciones totalmente dispares. Hoy en día, en pleno febrero de 2010 en Asunción hay problemas graves en barrios residenciales por la escasez de agua y electricidad. En el bañado no sabría apreciar si ocurre esto con frecuencia o no, éste es un mundo que se mueve en un ritmo totalmente distinto.
14:47 - On the way I found these two children bathing in totally different situations. Today, in the middle of February 2010 in Asunción there are serious problems in residential neighborhoods by the scarcity of water and electricity. In the marsh I could not determine whether this happens often or not, this is a world that moves in a completely different pace.



14:52 - Un joven pintaba su casita mientras su familia lo observaba; quizás pensando que el color traería vientos de esperanza de tinte político renovados.

14:52 - A young man painting his house while his family watched, perhaps thinking that the color would bring winds of hope renewed political tinge.

15:00 hs. - La gente del barrio rezaba en esta capillita. 5 minutos más tarde llegamos al lugar donde conoceríamos a una niña que hace malabarismo en las esquinas de la ciudad.
15:00 hs. - The locals prayed in this chapel. 5 minutes later we reached the place where we met a girl who juggles in the streets of the city.



15:04 hs. - Pa'i Oliva quería compartir con nosotros el caso de esta niña, muy tímida y retraída, cuyo rostro se ilumina cuando "hace su arte". Ella nos mostró lo que sabía hacer, no necesitaba hablar para ello... y sí, vimos la luz en su sonrisa.
15:04 hs. - Pa'i Oliva wanted to share with us the case of this girl, very shy and retiring, whose face lights up when "do her art." She showed us what he could do, no need to speak for it... and yes, we saw the light in her smile.



15:08 - Con la imagen de arriba, me despido de esta entrada parafraseando unas líneas de Pa'i Oliva en su blog.

"Lo que sí hay que afirmar es el hecho de que en el Bañado Sur es difícil por la pobreza darle al hijo discapacitado aquella atención que se merece. Nuestros niños discapacitados viven encerrados en sus casas y no tienen más horizonte que la cama y los brazos de su madre."

15:08 - With the picture above, I say goodbye to this entry paraphrase some lines Pa'i Oliva on his blog.

"What must be said is that in the South Marsh by poverty is difficult to give the disabled child that attention it deserves. Our children with disabilities live at home locked and have no other horizon than the bed and arms of his mother".

No pudo haber plasmado mejor una realidad a la que sólo pude observar y que algunas madres la viven en carne propia. Eso me hace admirar la fortaleza de las mujeres paraguayas, de aquellas que pensamos que sólo existían cuando terminó la guerra grande... Sin lugar a dudas el trabajo de Pa'i Oliva en todos los lugares donde actuó, es la viva imagen del sacrificio, el ímpetu, la perseverancia y el inconmensurable amor por los demás. Pa'i Oliva es mi candidato a algún futuro Nobel por la Paz.

No one could have better reflected reality that I could only observe and some mothers experience it at firsthand. That makes me admire the strength of Paraguayan women, those who believe that only existed when the Big War ended... Undoubtedly the work of Oliva Pa'i wherever performed, is the spitting image of sacrifice, drive, perseverance and immense love for others. Pa'i Oliva is my candidate for a future Nobel for Peace.
