Kambua Cua 2011

El 8 de Enero, como lo había anunciado en posteos anteriores, tuve la suerte de participar en el gran Festival del Kamba Cua 2011. Los Kamba Cua se establecieron en Loma Campamento (Fernando de La Mora) desde la época en que llegaron al país, junto con José Gervasio Artigas; y en donde se dedicaron a la agricultura y también lechería. Hasta ahora muchos siguen definiendo a los Kamba Cua como "Artigas kue" (pueblo de Artigas). El Festival, actualmente tiene una vigencia de 20 años, y en cada año participan muchos artistas de danza y música, para que luego en un momento las 3500 almas que se congregan para disfrutar todo el show se dejen seducir por el fuego, los tambores, las hermosas pieles y el frenesí del baile, que los transportan a misteriosas tierras africanas. Con mucho Candombe y sonrisas, esto fue el Kamba Cua 2011.

On January 8th, as I announced in previous postings, I was lucky to participate in the great Festival of Kamba Cua 2011. The Kamba Cua settled down in Loma Campamento (Fernando de la Mora) since the time they arrived in the country, together with José Gervasio Artigas, and where they started to work in agriculture and milk production. Until now, many continue to define the Kamba Cua as "Artigas kue" (Artigas people). The Festival started 20 years ago, and each year involves many artists from dancers to musicians, so in a moment, the 3500 souls who congregate to enjoy the whole show can be seduced by the fire, drums, the beautiful skin color and the burst of dancing, that would transport them to the mysterious lands of Africa. With a lot of Candombe and smiles, this was the Kamba Cua 2011.

22:09 - Con las inclemencias del tiempo, se perdió una hora, hasta que se inicie el espectáculo . Eso produjo que muchas sillas permanezcan vacías durante las primeras presentaciones, incluso yo mismo llegué tarde para la presentación de Yumi Akaeda, quien hace 2 años vino a trabajar en el país, se enamoró de nuestras arpas, nuestra hermosa guarania, y ofreció un par de músicas en agradecimiento por esta bella tierra que supo acogerla. De igual modo, la gente llegaría eventualmente al Festival.
22:09 - With some inconvinience because of the weather, we lost an hour, until the start of the show. That led many seats to remain empty during the first presentations, even I was late for the presentation of Yumi Akaeda, who 2 years ago came to work at this country, and she felt in love with our harps, our beautiful guarania, and she offered a couple of songs in appreciation for this beautiful land that welcomed her. Anyway, people will eventually come to the Festival.

Con fuerte raíz tradicional del interior de nuestro país, la compañía de Ballet "Kyre'y" realizó presentaciones que lograron efervescer la sangre y palmas de los presentes. With strong traditional roots from inside our country, the company's Ballet "Kyre'y" made presentations that raised the excitement and clapping of the audience.

22:24 - Llegaría el turno de Ricardo Flecha que cautivó con su tremenda voz y sobre todo por su elección musical con la que abrió su presentación: Cielito del Paraguay; acompañado del eximio pianista Oscar Fadlala.
22:24 - Then it was the turn of Ricardo Flecha who captivated with his tremendous voice and especially his choice of music with which he open his presentation: Cielito del Paraguay, accompanied by the virtuoso pianist Oscar Fadlala.

22:30 - El temor de la lluvia había terminado y la gente se animaba a más. Poco a poco iba llegando el público y disfrutando una excelente presentación de la noche con un variado repertorio de guaranias, a cargo de Yoryi Torales y los Nuevos Paraguayos, quien también deleitó con su privilegiada voz que por momentos remembraba a Luis A. del Paraná.
22:30 - The fear of the rain had ended and people were encouraged to more. Slowly, people start coming out to the Festival and then enjoying an excellent presentations of the night with a diverse repertoire of guaranias, by Yoryi Torales and New Paraguayans, who's also delighted with his exceptional voice which at times remembrances the voice of Luis A. del Parana.

Las hermosas y bellas niñas del grupo de danza de Kamba Cua, quienes al igual que el resto de sus compañeros de la comunidad se paseaban y jugaban por el lugar, esperando su presentación que comenzaría cerca de la media noche. Niñas que pertenecen a ese grupo que por varios años mantendrá viva la llama de esta tradición y cultura. The cute and beautiful girls of dance group Kamba Cua, who like the rest of their community members were walking and playing around the place, waiting for their presentation that will begin near midnight. Girls belonging to a group that for several years will kept alive the flame of this tradition and culture.

Si uno suele asistir a festivales u otros festejos en el interior del país donde hayan niños, siempre encontrará a los tradicionales vendedores de globos que no se pierden de estas valiosas oportunidades para "llevar un poco de pan" a su casa. If you usually go to festivals or other celebrations within the country, especially if there are children prensent, you will likely find traditional baloon sellers; taking advantage of the valuable opportunity to "bring some bread to home".

23:11 - Marcelo Rojas extrajo con uñas y dientes hermosas melodías de su arpa, incluso pasando por tierras internacionales donde no faltó "Zorba el Griego" ni "Carnavalito". 23:11 - Marcelo Rojas extracted with all his might beautiful melodies of his harp, even going through international lands, where he didn't miss even "Zorba the Greek" or "Carnavalito".

Los niños quedan cautivados con la maestría de Marcelo Rojas y su arpa, en su versión de "Zorba el Griego", que hizo aplaudir al público por tratarse de un ritmo in-crescendo que contagia. En la otra imagen observamos parte del atuendo de un niño del grupo de danza, que se descalzará cuando llegue la hora de su baile.
Children were captivated with the mastery of Marcelo Rojas and his harp, in its version of "Zorba the Greek", he made the public clap along the melodies because it is an in-crescendo pace that is contagious. In another image we see part of the dress of a child's dance troupe, which will have to take his shoes off when it comes the time to dance.

23:34 - Lizarella Valiente sube al escenario para combinar con dulce voz y hermosa presencia, a los atrapantes sonidos de las cuerdas de Rojas. Combinación que deleitaba ojos y oídos.
23:34 - Lizarella Valiente goes on the stage to combine with her sweet voice and beautiful presence, the immersive sounds of the strings of Rojas. Combination that is delightful for eyes and ears.

23:43 - Suena el Turú de los Maká, en un ambiente de absoluto silencio y respeto por parte del público. La presentación de los mismos simboliza al igual que los Kamba Cua, el apego por la cultura y tradición ancestrales, reminiscencias de antepasados de estas tierras. 23:43 - You can hear the sounds of the Maká's Turú in an environment of absolute silence and respect by the public. The presentation of the same symbolizes -as the Kamba Cua- the attachment to ancient culture and tradition, reminiscent of the ancestors of these lands.

Nuestros indios Maká, que viven en su asentamiento cerca de Remanso también de a poco están impulsando nuevamente sus tradiciones y cultura, para que nunca se pierdan, para que les permita mantener las raíces de sus orígenes tan presentes, para que nosotros conozcamos más de lo que se esconde en nuestro país. No me cabe que alguien hable de "la garra guaraní" sin que estas facetas le interesen o le importen.
Our Maká Indians, who live in their natural reserve near Remanso also brought back some of their traditions and culture, to preserve it alive, allowing them to keep the roots of their origins so present, so that we get to know more about what is hidden in our country. I have no room in my mind for people who talk about "the Guarani claw" without being interested or caring about these facets.

Los Maká danzan en círculo, tomados unos a otros de los brazos y acompañados de las mujeres atrás de ellos. El silencio y admiración del público permitían que no se necesite de equipos ni micrófonos, para disfrutar del único ritmo producido por sus voces con una cadencia que transportaba a yerbales y selvas de un antigüo Chaco menos inhóspito que el de hoy en día.
The Maká dance in a circle, holding each other's arms and accompanied by the women behind them. The silence and admiration of the public allowed no equipment needed or microphones, to enjoy the unique rhythm produced by their voices at a rate that transport you into herbal fields and jungles of an ancient Chaco, less bleak than today.

El público y fotógrafos se dejaron llevar por la magia de los Maká en esos pocos minutos en que estuvieron presentes pero dejaron profundas marcas y recuerdos, ante tan hermosa presentación.
The public and photographers were carried away by the magic of Maká in those few minutes that they were present, leaving us with deep marks and memories, with their beautiful presentation.

23:55 - El conductor de TV, Pedro Espínola y el Director del Grupo Tradicional Kamba Cua, Lázaro Medina entregarían estos presentes a las personas que durante estos 20 años sumaron importancia o apoyaron la cultura de esta comunidad.
23:55 - The TV host, Pedro Espinola and Group Director of Traditional Kamba Cua, Lazaro Medina would deliver these presents to people who during these 20 years joined or supported the cultural importance of this community.

00:04 - Sube al escenario el grupo Generación, de Villarrica, para hacer explotar al público en aplausos y vibrar en el coreo de sus músicas. Sin lugar a dudas de lo mejor que tenemos en el país, donde combinan talento, alegría y humildad. Generación supo agradecer entre tema y tema, los aplausos y la invitación que tuvieron para asistir a este importante Festival.
00:04 - The group Generación goes on stage, from Villarrica, to make the audience blow in applause and vibrate with the chorus of their music. Without doubts, some of the best we have in the country, where they combine talent, joy and humility. Generación knew how to thank between songs, the applause and the invitation they got to attend this important festival.

Tal era así de contagiante la música de Generación que una pareja no desaprovechó la oportunidad para bailar una alegre polca.
Generación's music was so contagious, that a couple did not miss the opportunity to dance a fun polka.

00:35 - Con el retraso inusitado debido al mal clima, llegó el momento donde se iniciaba la procesión del grupo Kamba Cua, con su patrono San Baltazar, acompañados de antorchas, tambores y bailarines. Las luces se apagan.
00:35 - With the unusual delay because of bad weather, the time came where the procession of the Kamba Cua group began, with its patron Saint Balthazar, accompanied by torches, drums and dancers. The lights get turned off.

La procesión camina a paso lento mientras Pedro Espínola habla sobre la tradición de los Kamba Cua, y el lento ritmo de los tambores acompaña al grupo. Darán la vuelta hasta ingresar al escenario, escondidos bajo velos de sombras y antorchas que iluminan lo justo y necesario, ante un público que con silencio y respeto, admira la cultura de esta noble comunidad.
The procession moves slowly while Pedro Espinola talks about the Kamba Cua's tradition, and the slow beat of drums accompanying the group. They will go around to enter the stage, hidden behind veils of shadow and torches that light just enough to be seen, before an audience that with silence and respect, admire the culture of this noble community.

Una niña me sonríe durante la presentación del grupo infantil de Kamba Cua, quienes desde pequeños son inculcados con estas tradiciones, para mantenerlas siempre vivas.
A girl smiles at me during the presentation of the childchild'ss group of Kamba Cua, who since childhood are inculcated with these traditions, to always keep it alive.

Los niños realizan bailes con sus respectivas compañeras de elenco, evocando viejas danzas africanas para buscar pareja.
The children performed dances with their cast partners, evoking ancient African dances to find a mate.

La gente se agolpa frente al escenario para filmar y fotografiar, logrando rechazo y abucheo del público, por lo que Pedro Espínola les solicita que no obstruyan la visualización de un show que es para todos. Fue la única nota negativa de la noche.
People massed in front of the stage to film and photograph, getting rejection and boos from the crowd, so Pedro Espinola asked to not obstruct the viewing of the show that is for everyone. That was the only downside of the night.

Varones mayores ejecutan sonidos atrapantes con los tambores, demarcando el ritmo y el jolgorio de los bailarines.
Older men playing drums with immersive sounds, marking the rhythm and fun of the dancers.

Mariví Vargas interpretó "Arenita Azul" y "Mojama", con una cálida voz y unos tambores que fueron tocados con suavidad y ritmos cautivantes.
Mariví Vargas sang "Arenita Azul"and "Mojama" with a warm voice and drums that were played with gently and captivating rhythms.

Las sombras de los tamboriles del Grupo Tradicional Kamba Cua, para mí simbolizan la marca que queda de aquellos negros esclavos Africanos que desembarcaron en Uruguay. Esclavos que luego felizmente encontraron libertad como lanceros cuando caminaban junto a Artigas en nuestras tierras.
The shadows of the drummers of Kamba Cua traditional Group, to me symbolizes the mark that remains of those African slaves who landed in Uruguay. Slaves that later happily found freedom as they walked as lancers along Artigas on our land.

Comienza el frenesí del baile de los mayores, quienes no dejaron tranquilo al escenario con movimientos fuertes y vivos, cuerpos sensuales, con sonrisas y con alegría.
The excitement of the olders dance starts, who didn't leave the stage at peace with strong and lively movements, with sensual bodies, with smiles and joy.

Durante muchos días y durante horas de ensayo estos bailarines practican para el festejo de este día importante. No es un grupo de danza que trabaje de forma permanente, porque cada persona de la comunidad fuera de su trabajo, apoya con su tiempo y sus ganas de impulsar la cultura de sus ancestros, en medio de este mundo donde deben -como todos nosotros-, nuevamente ser esclavos del tiempo y el sistema.
For many days and during hours of training these dancers practice for the celebration of this important day. Isn't a dance group that works on a permanent basis, because every person in the community out of work, supports with their time and their desire to promote the culture of their ancestors, in the midst of this world where they -as all of us- are slaves of the time and the system.

En los bailes del grupo Kamba Cua no faltaron sonrisas ni alegría, contagiaba y llenaba el alma de felicidad.
In the dances of Kamba Cua group, they weren't short at all with smiles or joy, that spread and filled the soul with happiness.

Y las chicas no hacían más que arrancar suspiros... And the girls did nothing but get sighs from the audience...

Y en esta antigua danza, tal como la hicieron los niños anteriormente, las mujeres se ubican frente al escenario y luego llega el grupo de varones detrás de ellas y bailan en un clima de éxtasis y tambores que redoblan y aumentan su ritmo desaforadamente.
And in this ancient dance, as the children did earlier, women are placed in front of the stage and then the group of men comes behind them and dance in an atmosphere of ecstasy and drums that sound fast and strengthen its pace frantically.

Al unísono, todos los tambores se detienen y en el rostro de esta bailarina se refleja el sentimiento común de los demás, por haber terminado de forma satisfactoria este show que duró más de 45 minutos y en el cual no dejaron de moverse, de sonreir, de bailar, de entregarse a San Baltazar y al sonido melódico y apasionante de sus tambores. Yo me retiraba rumbo a Santiago, Misiones para la "Fiesta de la Doma y el Folklore", que será la próxima entrada, la próxima historia, la próxima aventura, de este humilde blog que intenta promocionar este bello país, con su bella gente, sus bellas tradiciones y sus bellas costumbres.
In unison, all the drums stop and this dancer's face reflected the feeling in common with others, for having completed satisfactorily the show that lasted over 45 minutes in which they did not stop moving, smiling, dancing, to surrender to San Baltazar and to the exciting and melodic sound of drums. I was going to Santiago, Misiones for the "Festival of Rodeo and Folklore", which is the next entry, the next story, the next adventure, of this humble blog that tries to promote this beautiful country, with its beautiful people its fine traditions and fine customs.

Con los tambores al fondo del escenario se apagaron las memorias y evocaciones a África, pero el show artístico continuó hasta cerca de las 4 de la mañana, donde continuaron grandes como Carlitos Vera, Luis Parra y los Vinilos, Surgente, Ñasaindy, Los Ojeda y cerraba con Quemil Yambay y los Alfonsinos. Todo un gran espectáculo que supo atrapar a más de 3500 personas y que seguro para el 2012 esa marca aumentará, así como la cantidad de shows artísticos.
With the drums at the back of the stage, the memories and evocations of Africa where faded, but the artistic show went on until about 4 am, where it was continued with great artists as Carlitos Vera, Luis Parra and the Vinilos, Surgente, Ñasaindy, Los Ojeda and closed with Quemil Yambay and Alfonsinos. Over all a wonderful show that knew how to catch more than 3500 people and surely that mark will be increase by 2012, as the number of art shows.

Aprecio mucho que hayas seguido esta historia, y si participaste como público en el Kamba Cua 2011, espero que estas imágenes te hayan hecho recordar ese hermoso y atractivo espectáculo. Cada año más gente se suma a este Festival que sin dudas se va convirtiendo en uno de los más importantes al inicio de enero. Esperemos que en 2012 hayan más artistas, más niños -esas semillas ya cultivadas con tradición africana que comienzan a profundizar en la cultura de sus ancestros- y más baile de cuerpos sensuales al son de tambores. I appreciate that you followed this story, and if you participated as an audience in Kamba Cua 2011, I hope these pictures made you remember that beautiful and speactacular show. Each year more people are attend to this festival that will undoubtedly has become one of the most important in the beginning of January. I hope that in 2012 they have more artists, more children -those seeds already planted with African tradition that begin to deepen in the culture of their ancestors- and more sensual bodies dancing with the drums.
