| On December 31, 2010 I decided to spend the new year differently. Before I had the good fortune to work closely with these angels who watch over his people, the volunteer firefighters -yellow or blue as defined them-, showing his tireless and selfless courage, photographing them in action in POSTS like: "Fire from downtown, in two shots 2009", "Fire in Gráfica Asuncena " or "Drills of Asuncion's Fireman". But this time, after preliminary talking, I summed up my visit to the 3rd. Volunteer Fire Company of Sajonia, because I wanted to bring to you the other side, which is behind the uniforms in that special and intimate atmosphere that is the headquarters. But it would not be on any given day, but I wll accompany them in their old night, to see the life of a firefighter in another of its edges, the year-end dinner, the guard, and then would watch with uncertainty that is hides under the cloak of dangerous in the early start of the year. Unlike others, the firefighters because of their great dedication to service, spend the New Year away from their family, away from the fun of family, away from the festivities that are rooted in music, overcrowding and alcohol. Firefighters spent together with family that they chose, with those fellow of guard and dangerous moments, with these comrades and superiors, hugs, friendship, laughter and strong bonds that never break. Welcome to the old night and another year of the January's Angels. |
21:40 - It was December 31 and I came to the fire station of the Third Company of Sajonia. A quiet mood, where one vehicle had left the station to refuel, to await what could be a long night.
The Third Company, stands in 1989, behind Park C.A. López. During November and December we can see it nestled in the upright antenna of Canal 9 that turns their traditional Christmas lights.
Raul and Ania, rookie firefighters, make regular checks of rigor at the beginning of each shifts, where equipments are reviewing from the tank-truck AT-31, in this case the pump and hoses if they are securely stored so is easy to pull out, also the drawer where equipment such as shovels, boat hooks, screens, rakes, etc., equipment fro removal and grass fires.
In addition to vehicle controls they make a test with the personal protective equipment (PPE), which the firefighters called cotona (jacket) and their gardener (the pants). Also the self contained breathing apparatus that is used to enter in the fire and protect against smoke and high temperatures. They controls the ball of air if they are fully loaded, if there is one that has a little less than the maximum, they change it quickly.
The wife -who is also a firefighter- of the officer who was in charge of the company that day, had come with her daughters to share a few minutes before returning to the family dinner. This is where one can understand the weight of the sacrifice of these firefighters, away from family and where children are the ones who will ask for his father or mother, at dinner time or when the midnight arrives.
The officer in charge of the Company, Lieut. 1st. Christian Ojeda-or-Yenyi, had returned in that vehicle that go to refuel, and was about to receive some directions from the central. Then he takes me to a small tour of the unit and teach me some things.
The logo and slogan of the Third Company, located in the front door of the room for the Captains.
Inside the ER, in addition to telephones, walkie-talkie, papers, folders and cabinets, I was curious about by 3 switchs. Yenyi explains that each alarm sounds different depending on the type of service, so when firefighters hear (despites they are either awake or sleeping) they know which vehicle corresponds to the emergency. Also, depending of the vehicle they know who firefighters go, because that was assigned at the beginning of the shift. These codes "ten" (10-51 is assistance to an injured or sick, 10-40 is fire and 10-41 is an accident), along with the terms, charges, operational and other things, all of them were originated in Chile -the pioneers in South America- and where the other fire stations took as a form of work and all logistics in management.
Sasha, the mascot of the unit, lay inside the emergency room, a little off due to an operation she had received recently.
The firefighters' uniforms also rest and lay in formation, waiting to be called for the next service, as if they were ready to go. For each firefighter, his uniform is like his life, and they care with the utmost zeal. Is very difficult for them to have one well-stocked with all the elements that should have, and little by little when oficially becomes a firefighter, it is getting the things according to their possibilities and availability of the Company. Many of these uniforms were donated by other countries, some even used by other firefighters in earlier times. Some costume accessories are achieved by their own credit, through the Company. The uniform is not only a wardrobe is a reflection of their work, their sacrifice and it is what separates the hazard of the fragility of the naked human body.
The barracks like a house or other detachment, also continues with Christmas traditions. The interior of the place is decorated with a crib, owned by the unit, which grew over time and was purchased by the firefighters themselves, and in some cases the volunteers get more figures to add. On arrival of each December, the rookie firefighters are those who assemble and decorate it.
Firefighters are a big family, and as I said before, is the family that their choosed. Here Ania, Royse and Herbert decorates the plates of food that each of the volunteers brought today for New Year's dinner. Looking at them you cannot see beyond they as three brothers sharing at the family dinner.
Yenyi says to the other firefighters about my presence in the unit and what I came to do today. Then they ask me for some words. I had nothing but praise for them for what they do every day of the year, tirelessly and sacrificed.
22:45 - A thin layer of fog hid the antenna of Canal 9 behind a veil. In many years this was a december 31th where the day was occupied by tremendous rain, and at night the temperature drop and sporadic drizzle gave us a London climate.
The table is ready, and then the firefighters go to dinner. Each volunteer brought a contribution from his home to this wonderful dinner. In most cases, parents and wives are wonderful because they helped with the dishes, despite not having their relative at dinner in the house. As we see the beauty of a dinner that should not be spared because it happens in the unit, in the worst cases, firefighters must leave their plates with food as they are, at the call of an emergency.
22:55 - In an environment where only exuded camaraderie, fellowship and relaxation, the firefighters began their last meal of 2010, together at the same table, under the same roof.
23:02 - Francisco, a volunteer with special guard (has a more flexible schedule because of work), present himself with his food for the dinner, and then requested permission to enter and occupy a place at the table next with the rest of the guys. Respect for the hierarchy makes the system works, which achievements, experience and goals are reflected in promotions.

23:38 - The dinner ended with no more worries, and San Lorenzo fire was being contained. After a dinner that each one tasted in moderation, there was even time for a dessert.
Moments before the new year, the firefighters of the Third Company talk to each other as I let myself be taken by the scene where their uniforms paint with yellow color in the reflection of the water of the day's rain.
00:00 - Happy 2011, bombs sound, fireworks explode, and the joy is loosed for having left behind a very fast 2010.
Daisy and her little sister hug for a long time. Besides all the hubbub around, the human side behind the hard and tough uniform was hanging in a locker, materializes and moves in that moment where the two sisters while they are together, miss their mother who is currently abroad.
00:01 - While bombs and fireworks are exploding, the station sounded all its sirens, turn the lights off in the down floor and let someone enjoy the game of red colors of the vehicles, for a couple of minutes. Thus firefighters also support the resounding sound of the new year.
In this image I see two realities of the new year, Lester and his family who accompanied him tonight in the unit all together, in a little place on the second floor, while in the other side the girls who have parents in distant places, making calls and answering messages of happiness and success.
Everything happened very fast, while for other watches they were apparently still celebrating the twelve o'clock, we had spent two minutes of the new year. From the top floor of the Third Company, I have a small and partial view of the city where I can see the haze of smoke, fireworks and still hear the roar of some bombs.
00:15 - Gustavo, one of the firefighters invited me to visit the only Fire Museum of the country, which is located within the Company. This museum was opened in 2009, in conmemoration of the 20 years since the founding of the Third Company.
The Museum consists of several elements like the first flag of the Company, plaques of appreciation and gratitude that they have received over the years, souvenirs of foreign visitors who were received, many objects with history and value personal either as testimonial, which by little along with things they already had in the Company, and other which volunteers bringing from home.
Like this tile in the glass case, which belonged to the floor of Ycua Bolanos and was brought by one of the volunteers who had it at home, something that marked him a lot, and when the museum was created, he wanted the tile to be there.
Among other things, helmets from different time that are not used any more because of years, uniforms from the founders, etc., and the clock was marking the 00:17, when Gustavo showed me this picture of "Paraguayan March" from when they were evacuating people from the square, then the alarm of the company rings with power, and I follow Gustavo with hurry.
Down from the stairs, down from the tube, from everywhere appeared firefighters that stopped what they were doing and with the call of 10-42 (people stuck in an elevator) they knew how mobile and positions to take. This time they would send two vehicles
In less than 2 minutes firefighters were ready, dressed with their equipment, and the vehicle was in march; Yenyi tells me to go with the ambulance where there is more room for me. This was the first service of 2011, among all the fire companies.
|
00:23 - Having reached the place in about 6 minutes after the call, happily, the building occupants were able to help to remove the lady caught in the elevator. The firefighers of the vehicle go back to their position, while the lady will be attended by the others from the ambulance. Lester and Gustavo and watch from the sidewalk what happens inside the building.
This ambulance is one of two donated by Vigili del Fuoco, Reggio Emilia (Italy) in 2009. The other belongs to the Fire Company of Luque. This vehicle is ready with special equipment for intervention in motor vehicle accidents, electrical generators, outboard motor, fire protection equipment, uniforms, among others. Again, from the ambulance I can see the "north rose" of my story as I go to my house for a few hours, then later I will return to the station.
07:50 - During the long night there was no call of emergency, apart from the normal guards in Avenue C.A. Lopez and in the Sajonia Club, where firefighters are there a few hours for any eventuality. Herbert rests on a couch accompanied by Sasha, while in the bedroom above the rest of his comrades do the same in their beds.
In the courtyard of the Company, while the faint chirping of birds adorn the new day of the new year, the dew had left her wet mark on the nature, respecting the daily process. Sajonia and the Downtown were quiet neighborhoods in the dark hours that separated the midnight of the first rays of the sun.
08:40 - Perhaps with indifference about the activity of young people on a day like today, older people take advantage of the absolute tranquility and freedom of Park C.A. López for their walks. Today, it is a morning to walk in peace.
In the workshop of the unit rests on the first fire truck that had Paraguay, an actor in many services. On one side you can see a crank that when rotate, the loud siren sounds.
Herbert played with Sasha while other comrades who stood guard until 06:00 woke up and started down the stairs
10:40 - The Company complete standing, after a long night in which fortunately there were no services that address inSajonia or Downtown, breakfast on the first morning of 2011.
|
10:57 - The girls was ordered the beds and folded sheets bedroom, when suddenly the alarm sounds again and very fast they stop what they were doing. A car was on fire on Third Street.
The burning vehicle had been consumed almost entirely in the hands of the owner's friend, being a bad way to start the year for both. The group then returned to the Unit to continue with the shift. A warm morning and the heat not only felt in the environment but also reflected under the uniform.
12:40 - A round of tereré among volunteers to turn off the oppressive heat, to recalling stories of the "new last year," and thanks for having a year's beginning without tragic services with fatal victims.
Thank you for your willingness, for being cool, for your dedication to service and for taking care of us, boys and girls.
| And so ends this story, where the Volunteer Fire Department opened their arms to me as a friend, which allowed me and my camera a bit closer and show the other side of the door of the headquarters. We sometimes see firefighters working hours and tirelessly in accidents or fires, but lately more in accidents. We always see them there, when they arrived or when they leave, as actors in a play that exit and then we don't know what happens, today we have gone behind the scenes and we have known at least a small part of what's going on there. This story was fortunately not tragic toll in any way, whether material or human. It's a shame that every day they are a bit away from its primary function that was extinguish the fire or down kittens from trees; so my greatest respect and admiration where sometimes they have to be responsible for someone's else actions, they have direct contact with death, with violence, with blood. To be a firefighter one must have the dedication to service. In any situation that comes to them, they show devotion, courage and sacrifice, so that's why I think they are Angels on earth. If you have an emergency, remember to call 132 (one, three, two). |
